The UNCSA Police and Public Safety Department provides a variety of safety, security, and emergency planning, response, and management services for the University to include: 24/7 Law Enforcement Services, 24/7 Communications Center, Emergency Management, Parking Management, and Enforcement, Endpoint Physical Security Systems and One Card Management and more.
Primary Description of Work
The position encompasses all aspects of a modern law enforcement agency including patrol, investigations, telecommunications, security, accreditation, crime prevention, professional standards, and IT support and in addition parking enforcement. This is professional work involving directing a public safety operation engaged in enforcing the laws of the State of North Carolina and the United States Government at UNCSA. Other responsibilities may include, but are not limited to; recommending policy and procedure, planning and organizing operations, assisting with budget development and related resource allocation, and maintaining appropriate relations with local and other State law enforcement agencies and with the media acting in lieu of the Chief of Police as the need arises.

Varied, but typically Monday-Friday -typically 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
Description of Responsibilities and Duties
The UNCSA Police and Public Safety Department consists of multiple areas of focus. The Law Enforcement Division requires closer oversight to ensure operational excellence for the provided services. The Deputy Chief position will provide an individual critically focused on internal operational excellence of the law enforcement branch, relieve the Chief of Police from involvement in routine daily operations, and provide a clear second in command during absences of the Chief. Assist with patrol operations as needed. Oversee and facilitate grant writing responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
A minimum of a bachelors degree or greater and 7 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience or an associate degree and 9 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. At least 3 years of the experience must have been in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Sergeant or greater. At the agency head’s discretion, this requirement may be modified to require the noted supervisory experience to be at the level of Captain or greater. Certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible for out of state lateral hires.
Preferred Qualifications
NC Advanced Law Enforcement Certification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The person holding this position is required to be certified as a law Enforcement Officer in the State of North Carolina or to be qualified to receive probationary certification conditional on full certification being obtained within one year of hire.
