Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Associate Director for Research and Innovation for the Center for Marine Science (CMS) is responsible for overseeing research activities of The Center in support of the vision and mission established by the Executive Director. The Associate Director will work with the Executive Director to support basic and applied research activity, including the development of early career scientists and serve as an advocate to balance the needs across a wide breadth of marine science research and associated educational and service interests.
The Associate Director serves on CMS’s leadership team with responsibility for managing a diverse faculty and staff, and aid budget planning and administration of funds supporting the facility and research and academic program activity at CMS, as directed by the Executive Director. Participates in fund raising efforts, and promotes CMS research activities. Manages research personnel.
This is an at-will 12-month, leave-earning position. The expectation is an initial term of service of three years, with possibility of renewal.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Must have earned a doctorate from an accredited university. Must possess a significant record of achievement in teaching, scholarship, and service appropriate as a tenured associate or full professor in a marine-related discipline. 5-7 years of experience of administrative academic and/or research experience in a leadership capacity, such as department chair or similar role.

- Proven record in the recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty and staff
- Possess a proven track record in grant and contract activity
- Possess a record of success in fundraising activities
- Ability to support both basic and applied research, encourage the development of early career scientists, and advocate for balance and needs across a wide variety of marine science research and education
- Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, embrace and practice a consultative leadership style, including an appreciation for shared governance
- Commitment to developing and maintaining a civic engagement, community partnerships, and outreach activity
- Ability to understand and manage operations and facilities
- Accomplished, energetic, and visionary skills capable of leading CMS, including its students, faculty, and staff, both at UNCW and outside UNCW
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Knowledge of UNCW and/or UNC-system policies and practices and knowledge of UNCW CMS and marine-related departments is preferred.

The University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Center for Marine Science (CMS) is recognized both nationally and internationally for conducting research that contributes to the understanding of environmental processes and problems. Through research, education, and outreach, the Center strives to increase knowledge and cultivate public awareness about coastal and marine sciences. This includes a variety of fields such as physical oceanography; marine and coastal biology; marine, atmospheric and natural products chemistry; marine geology, aquaculture, and environmental sciences. Currently there are more than 100 active research programs supported by CMS and over 140 scientists, staff and students broadly associated with the unit.
The teaching and research facility located on the Intracoastal Waterway in southeastern North Carolina features state of the art core facilities in spectrometry and spectroscopy, light stable isotopes, biotechnology, aquaculture, DNA and water quality analysis as well as running seawater systems, a coastal workboat fleet and a wide range of oceanographic equipment that are available to all CMS researchers. The Center supports educational programs related to marine science, including the MS Marine Science degree as well as courses and students from various marine-science related academic departments. It also supports several outreach entities, including NC Sea Grant, and the NC National Estuarine Research Reserve; Marine Quest, amount others.
