Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the Abrons Student Health Center (SHC) is to provide student-centered affordable, quality health and preventive services to the students of UNCW. The SHC provides comprehensive medical services, a retail pharmacy, health education, and intervention services. Utilizing an ecological health model, the SHC supports collegiate success and sustained health and wellness for all UNCW students.
As a part of the SHC, Health Promotion serves as the campus resource for information on a variety of health and wellness topics, including alcohol and other drugs, nutrition, sexual health, sleep, and stress. Services and educational programming are provided to increase students’ knowledge and commitment to personal health and well-being. The office also provides educational programs for the campus conduct system and coordinates the collegiate recovery community.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Coordinator of Prevention and Recovery is part of the team working to create a comprehensive focus on health and well-being for our students. This position is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive program for alcohol and other drug prevention and education. This position oversees the Collegiate Recovery Community and will also be available to the campus community for consultation and education surrounding other health and wellness issues.

The Coordinator of Prevention and Recovery will:
  • Design, implement, and evaluate educational programs in the areas of alcohol and other drugs (AOD) for the UNCW student population.
  • Provide leadership and support to the Collegiate Recovery Program, providing oversight for all programming.
  • Be responsible for keeping abreast of alcohol and other drug trends, issues, and research that directly affect the college-aged population; serving as a resource for campus.
  • Serve as AOD consultant and support to Coordinator of Peer Health Education and the Peer Educator Program.
  • Present educational health programs to classes, residence halls, Greek life, student organizations, and others as needed.
  • Work closely with the Associate Director and other staff in planning, implementing, and evaluating larger scale health programming.
  • Provide consultation to students, staff, and faculty on health topics as needed.
  • Serve as an active member of the campus well-being initiative.
  • Serve as a member of Student Health Center and Division of Student Affairs committees as assigned.
  • Maintain and promote a positive, professional, and respectful manner with a focus on customer service, cooperation, inclusiveness, confidentiality, and HIPAA.
  • Maintain active professional certification and CE requirement as needed.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Graduation from a four-year college or university or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from accredited institutions.


Preferred education, professional skills and experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Education, Public or Community Health, or related field, OR a Master’s degree in Health Education, Public or Community Health, or related field is preferred.
  • Current working knowledge of current health issues affecting college students
  • Current working knowledge of alcohol, tobacco and other drug trends, issues and research that directly affect the college-aged population
  • Experience delivering and developing educational programs on a variety of health-related issues
  • Detail oriented and able to manage multiple priorities at once
  • Ability to effectively communicate with students, staff, faculty, families, and local partners, with a focus on confidentiality
  • CHES or MCHES certification
  • Current CPR certification
  • Prior experience working with Collegiate Recovery Program or populations in recovery
