Description
This position is an integral part of our UND campus and in providing strategic support efforts in a safety capacity! This position will perform duties associated with providing safety director functions for the planning, administration, and supervision of the Radiation and Chemical Safety, Environmental Health, Hazardous Materials programs, Biological Safety, and Physical Infrastructure for the University by leading, defining, and implementing program goals, priorities and values with the ability to effectively integrate several highly regulated subject and program areas.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Planning, administration and supervision of Radiation (ionizing & non-ionizing) and Chemical Safety, Environmental Health, Hazardous Material, Biological Safety, Fire Safety, and Activity/Events Programs
- Assists and/or administers Asbestos, Air Quality Programs and Respirator Program
- Oversees hazardous materials handling and disposal
- Provides leadership in teaching and training services in areas of responsibility as required by regulations
- Responds to emergency needs for radiation and chemical spills and Homeland Security related issues
- Responds to routine campus inquiries and technical needs in areas of responsibility
- Provide strategic leadership and guidance for the Safety Unit, including people, data, and budgetary responsibilities and create one unit with a common mission in consultation with the AVP.
- Knowledge of project management and project leadership; including setting program goals, priorities and values.
- Provides leadership in the technical overview and self-audit services to departments on the campus for compliance with regulatory matters
- Exercise authority to shut down any unsafe activity that possess immediate danger to life and health and to
- make immediate notification of appropriate University administrative personnel
- Will interpret and analyze pertinent provisions of Federal, State, and Local laws, codes and rules; advise and educate the campus community regarding the results of those interpretations, and develop compliance strategies that balance regulatory mandates, available technology with operating budgets.
- Develop and revise safety programs in area of responsibility in response to changes in the University and state and federal regulations
- Consult with the campus community in coordinating pertinent provisions of law into existing University programs, policies, and operating procedures.
Required Competencies
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to use technical equipment associated with radiation and chemical safety program operations
- Ability to research new technologies and their related safety issues
- Complete all required safety and other mandatory training requirements
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelors Degree in Environmental, Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or related discipline
- 5 years directly related experience in safety, risk management, and/or hazardous materials field to include the preferred designation as Radiation Safety Officer or Assistant
- 3 years of supervisory experience
- Successful completion of criminal history records check.

Preferred Qualifications
- 6 years of directly related experience in safety, risk management, and or hazardous materials field to include the preferred designation as Radiation Safety Officer or Assistant.
- Certified Safety Engineer (CSE) or qualify to take exam
- Certified Risk Manager (CRM) or qualify to take exam
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or qualify to take exam
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or qualify to take
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or qualify to take exam
Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification
Salary based upon experience; exempt; benefited; full-time position
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm with possible varying weekend and evening hours
