Description:The Academic Director of the Master of Education Program is appointed by the Director of the Institute for Educational Initiatives. The Academic Director of the Master of Education Program reports to the Executive Director of ACE and is responsible for oversight of all dimensions of the Master of Education program that prepares, educates, and supports ACE Teaching Fellows in their service in under-resourced elementary and secondary Catholic schools across the United States.

Program Direction (65%)

Program Leadership
  • Articulate and advance a compelling vision for inspirational, innovative, and effective Catholic school teachers and the academic program to prepare them.
  • Research, design, and foster continuous improvement in a curriculum responsive to the needs of beginning teachers in K-12 Catholic schools in close collaboration with the M.Ed. faculty and with attention to perspectives from the field (e.g., superintendents and principals).
  • Equip ACE teachers to address effectively the diversity of students in Catholic schools through the curricular design of the program and the recruitment of faculty and clinical faculty who have these areas of expertise.
  • Monitor the academic performance of ~180 ACE teachers on an annual basis.
  • Cultivate a culture of collaboration at all levels, including working closely with the Director of Teacher Formation and Education Policy and the ACE Director of Spiritual Life to support the pastoral, and distinctively Catholic, dimensions of the program.

Recruiting and Retaining Exceptional Program Faculty and Staff
  • Advance the academic excellence of the program by attracting, sustaining, supervising, and mentoring a talented faculty of over two-dozen faculty members across the M.Ed. (including full-time Notre Dame and national adjunct faculty).
  • Oversee the recruitment and evaluation of practitioners who serve the program as clinical faculty.
  • Conduct meaningful faculty and staff annual reviews focused on professional growth.



Program Administration and Oversight
  • Ensure progress toward accreditation by meeting national and state standards.
  • Oversee the budget and day-to-day operations for the M.Ed.
  • Ensure the financial and operational health of the program through prudent budgeting and stewardship practices.
  • Manage and mentor a full-time Associate Program Director.

Teaching (25%)

The Director of the Master of Education program serves as a faculty member of ACE and the IEI. As such, the Director is expected to carry the following teaching load annually:
  • Academic Year Supervision
  • Teach the course, EDU 65950 Supervised Teaching, for at least one community (5 - 6 ACE teachers).
  • Visit each supervised ACE teacher at least once during the fall semester and again during the spring semester to conduct formal observations and to meet with each school leader.
  • Provide professional development support to individual ACE teachers.
  • Gather evidence and document professional growth and improvement of ACE teachers.



2. Teach distance education courses during the academic year
  • Maintain communication with all assigned teachers within EDU 65930 Clinical Seminar in Teaching (first three semesters) and EDU 65935 Capstone Seminar in Teaching (fourth semester).
  • Teach a section of Assessment, a 1-credit course each semester.



3. Teach an in-person course during the ACE summer session

Scholarship and Service (10%)

The Director of the Master of Education program is encouraged to conduct scholarship, broadly defined, to the extent that teaching and administrative duties allow for such work. The Director is also charged with cultivating a spirit of inquiry and supporting useful scholarly activity among the faculty of the program. Such efforts may include, for example, conducting research studies and sharing findings and results broadly in order to advance the field of Catholic education. The Director is expected to engage in service to the broader ACE, IEI, and University communities (e.g., serving on various committees including ACE's Executive Committee). The Director may be asked to undertake additional service-oriented duties, as deemed appropriate by the Executive Director of ACE.



Qualifications:
Competitive candidates will have a terminal degree in a relevant field and demonstrated excellence in core areas such as teacher formation, curriculum and instruction, and scholarship relevant to pedagogy and/or Catholic education. The Academic Director of the M.Ed. is appointed to the faculty of the University of Notre Dame at a rank commensurate with experience. The position will begin July 1, 2023.
