Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE:
This position is responsible for ensuring the highest quality of academic/musical graduate programs and student services. Promotes a graduate student body that represents academic and musical excellence, diversity, and leadership, while fostering an environment that endorses student achievement and support, and provides leadership in curricula and program development, implementation, evaluation, and accreditation. Provides strategic insight and assists in setting and carrying out institutional goals.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Graduate Programs:

  • Provide leadership for all graduate curricular programming; serve as primary resource for graduate students and faculty regarding issues of graduate programs of study; act as final authority for graduate advising and policy concerns, including adjusted programs of study, independent study proposals, transfer credits, and grading issues.
    • Supervise the Director of Advising and Graduate Services.
  • Chair the Graduate Research Committee (GRC) and Graduate Professional Committee (GPC).
  • Provide leadership to faculty and academic departments on new graduate course creation, new majors and programs, and implementation of same; manage long-range curricular planning and academic policy development in coordination with department chairs and associate deans.

Graduate Affairs:

  • Provide support and direction to faculty and administration for all graduate student issues; maintain open communication and discussion with faculty regarding student concerns; monitor students, progress through faculty reports, formal and informal; assist in mediation and/or intervention, as needed.
  • Lead efforts to ensure high retention and graduation rates across the graduate population; manage satisfactory academic progress reviews of all undergraduate students, including warning and probation status updates.
  • Manage all processes regarding changes of enrollment status for graduate students; approve all changes of enrollment status, in consultation with University Health Service, University Counseling Center, faculty, and administrative offices across the school and university.

Graduate Advising:

  • Supervise Director of Advising and Graduate Services (academic coursework and recital planning; annual degree audits - for advising purposes, grad-award preparation, and commencement; continuation of enrollment; monitor health insurance coverage; Sproull/Provost/Promise stipends; SAGE spreadsheet; CARE)
  • Fall orientation group and individual advising; Approve all MA degree academic plans; Resolve questions re: transfer credit, double-degree overlap of coursework; Approve all Independent Study proposals; Approve all change of major and LOA requests; Liaise with ISO and advise international students on CPT and OPT; Solve many confidential issues that arise from graduate students and faculty; Letters re: Financial Aid Warning, letters re: Probation, letters of Concern; Meet the Deans meetings with graduate students (ad hoc)

Graduate Admissions:

  • Develop strategic priorities, processes, and publications to enhance admission of graduate students. Engage Associate Dean of Admissions,
  • Interview all DMA students; provide information sessions for all MM students.

Graduate Awards, Assistantships, and Fellowships:

  • Manage awarding of graduate awards, assistant ships, and fellowships to all newly-admitted graduate students and all returning graduate students.
  • Craft and manage all award offers to be within the target ranges determined with ESM Finance and ESM Financial Aid for target discount rates and hourly stipend payments
  • Coordinate efforts with Academic Department Chairs to determine Graduate Awards.
  • Work with Department Chair of the Arthur Satz Department of Music to determine funding of Teaching Assistant (TA) and Department Assistant (DA) positions on the River Campus.

Additional Graduate Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Comprehensive Exam process for all DMA students (2-day written exam 3 times per year; 20 hour oral exam throughout the year).
  • Oversee Performance Requirements for MM and DMA students (approve lecture-recital proposals; oversee lecture-recital prize; oversee Artist Certificate requirements).

Student Affairs

  • Manages and oversees all aspects of student affairs, including orientation, student activities, and residential life
    • Supervise Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.
  • Lead the Student Support Team, which includes members from Academic Affairs, Graduate Studies, Student Affairs, and DPS.
  • Collaborate with University Health Service and University Counseling Center to promote student wellness.

Connections to University:

  • In collaboration with the Vice Provost for Graduate Education and other University-level offices, and at the direction of the Dean, assist with Eastman's efforts to work with and actively collaborate with other units of the University.
  • Serve on the University of Rochester Graduate Council Steering Committee.
  • Represent the Eastman School of Music on various committees related to position duties.

Other Responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in music or related field and 10 years of experience as an administrator in higher education required;
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills required;
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills required;
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook required;
  • Maintain professional status as a musician required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $107,224 - $160,846 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined byconsidering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
