JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of Student Services the Student Success Coach supports a consistent cohort of students throughout their collegiate careers from confirmation to graduation; incorporating a holistic approach to student success across a student’s collegiate career. The Student Success Coach is integrally connected to multiple areas of a student’s academic, personal, and future success by providing academic, career, and life coaching. In addition to academic coaching and student advocacy, Student Success Coach participates in teaching, development and implementation of coaching strategies, and professional development opportunities. This is a non-ranked faculty position. 

Major Responsibilities/Activities

Academic Coaching and Student Advocacy (60%)

Support assigned students with academic, career, and life coaching.

  • Academic Coaching:
  • Proactively mentor and coach students on goal setting, academic success skills, and utilizing appropriate academic resources.
  • Provides robust communication, orientation, course planning, and engagement during the onboarding process for incoming first-year students.
  • Works closely with faculty and other campus partners to support student success in and out of the classroom.
  • Assist students in navigating university policies, procedures, and resources.
  • Monitor student progress towards graduation; extract, analyze, and report on student progress utilizing available databases and resources (e.g. Colleague, Canvas, Pharos360).

Career Coaching

  • Mentor students on the career exploration process throughout their college careers by helping them discover and reflect on their personal skills, values, and interests.
  • Support and empower students in their career making process.
  • Work alongside students to develop their professional identities, utilizing strategies such as resume and cover letter writing, interviewing skills, career-based tools (ie. StrengthsFinder, Strong Interest Inventory, etc.), and job search skills.
  • Assist students with appropriate academic and experiential activities (e.g. internships, experiential opportunities, etc.) based on the student’s career and educational pathways (e.g. certificates, further education, etc.).

Personal Development

  • Support students in navigating the college transition process acting as a mentor and guide during the student’s first year.
  • Develop connection plans with students to engage in the broader campus community through student organizations, leadership opportunities, and community engagement.
  • Assist students in their identity formation regarding their values, identity, strengths, and passions.
  • Provide challenge and support for a student’s deeper sense of identity development, cultural awareness, and cultural humility.
  • Refer students to campus resources as needed.

Teaching and Management of Mentoring Resources (30%)

In addition to teaching, student success coaches will contribute significantly to projects related to advising and mentoring. Projects will be assigned and selected based on personal strengths and skills as well as institutional needs.

  • Teach select sections of FYS courses.
  • Organize and manage course materials and assignments utilizing Canvas Learning Management System.
  • Collaborate with Director of Franciscan Core Curriculum to create and continuously improve curriculum and align with general education outcomes.

Professional Development and Campus Engagement (10%)

  • Actively participate in Student Success Engagement and Equity Team meetings and initiatives.
  • Serve on cross-departmental teams for selected initiatives to further student success and engagement (e.g. Student Care Team, Council for Integrated Advising, etc.).
  • Continue professional development and scholarly activity in the field of student success to maintain knowledge of best practices and trends.
  • Serve on university-wide committees as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Master’s Degree: Master's in higher education, student personnel, educational leadership, or counseling, or similar field strongly preferred.

Experience

  • Experience in higher education at the undergraduate level with evidence of success in reaching diverse groups of students required.
  • Experience in academic advising/coaching undergraduates and/or mentoring preferred.

Knowledge And Skills

  • Ability to multi-task and provide exemplary customer service along with a professional demeanor and a positive attitude.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Team-oriented and skilled in working within a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement assigned responsibilities and to work well under pressure to meet established deadlines.
