What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Accountant position at University of Saint Joseph?
This position is responsible for accounting activities, account analysis, general tax matters, month end close, account reconciliation and other tasks. Also responsible for preparing the annual Form 990, maintaining tax compliance related to tuition waivers, employee benefits, 1099 filings, entertainer tax and other tax issues.
- Prepare annual and periodic tax filings (990, 990T, Sales and Use Tax, CT Entertainment Tax, W9 and other tax filing).
- Prepare and manage Charitable Gift Annuities (CGA's).
- Analyzes accounts as assigned, evaluates data for trending and identify areas of further improvement.
- Assist with Grant Accounting and reconciliation.
- Develops accounting workflows in the business office supporting financial reporting and Bursar in support and maintenance of a reliable internal control environment.
- Assist with Students refunds review and approval process.
- Manage office depot, amazon and UPS accounts.
- Assist with annual financial audit engagement, including preparation of financial statements and related workpapers; Serve as liaison to auditors.
- Provide support for other Business Office functions as these arises.
- Provide back up support to Payroll Office.
- Understand and manage PBU and UBIT transactions.
- Manage deferred revenue accounts.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Decision Making:
- Interprets and applies federal and state tax policy.
- Interprets and applies University and financial accounting polices related to accounting transactions.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in accounting or finance; Master’s degree and/or CPA designation helpful.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in accounting or finance field.
- Strong Knowledge in general tax accounting matters.
- Higher education experience or not for profit experience preferred.
- Previous experience in bank reconciliations, general ledger, month end closings.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines and budgets.
- Proficiency in excel including (pivot tables, and vlook-up).

- Able to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment.
- Possess solid general computer skills, including ability to work in a Windows environment. Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Internet, and other programs as needed (e.g., mail merge, data base management). Familiarity with specific applications used by the University/Department a plus.
