Job Purpose:
The University of Scranton is seeking a Coordinator of the Writing Center. The Writing Center is housed within the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence and provides peer-to-peer services to facilitate the improvement of written communication skills for students of all levels, in all disciplines, and in all phases of the writing process. The Coordinator is responsible for providing leadership, vision, and innovation in the design and deliver of peer tutoring related to writing and programming that will enhance writing on campus.
Essential Duties:
- Provide vision, leadership, planning, direction, and assessment of the activities of the Writing Center- Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate writing consultants- Teaching 1-2 courses per semester in the English Department, preparation and presentation of class lectures and grading of student work- Collaborate closely with the English Department and Director of the Gonzaga Program so that the Writing Center provides support to Writing 105, 106, and 107 students- Communicate as necessary with the faculty about Writing Center referrals- Make periodic reports to the English & Theatre Department- Collaborate closely with the Faculty Development Specialist, Learning Specialist, Reading Specialist, and other members of the Center for Teaching & Learning Excellence staff- Collaborate closely with the Academic Advising Centers and the Office of Global Education- Provide consultations to students who need assistance with writing as staffing requires- Promote Writing Center services to the academic community- Explore opportunities for external funding and other forms of resource management to enable the CTLE to support its goals- Participate in committees working on issues related to student learning as appropriate- Maintain knowledge of current developments in composition/rhetoric, writing center research, student learning and enrichment through participation in conferences, collaboration and conversation with other colleagues in field
Additional Skills Required:
- Knowledge of writing center theory and practice- Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills- Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly in understanding college students and in working with faculty- Excellent classroom teaching skills- Ability to work collaboratively within an academic community- Ability to think creatively and to demonstrate creative problem solving- Ability to create a supportive and nurturing learning environment- Ability to manage and meet deadlines- Must be able to respect, support and contribute to the Universitys Catholic and Jesuit mission
Minimum Education Requirements:
- Masters Degree in Composition, Rhetoric, Written Communication, English, Speech, Linguistics or related field
Preferred Education:
Minimum Job Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of two (2) years teaching writing in Higher Education
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a writing center or developmental center desirable- English as a Second Language (ESL) experience desirable
Schedule/Work Hours:
Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Additional hours as required. This is a 9 month per year schedule.
