The inaugural Director of the UT Martin Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL), reporting to the Associate Provost, will serve as a teacher-scholar to provide leadership, coordination, and direction for faculty; to organize and facilitate learning development programs to promote research-based instructional excellence; and to enhance student learning. The Director will provide leadership for the design, development, and implementation of a wide range of initiatives in the areas of teaching and learning, including faculty and student programs and functions that provide support to improve the teaching process, the integration of technology into the classroom, and the improvement of learning across the university.

Job Duties

  • Identifies, develops, implements, and evaluates appropriate faculty development activities deemed imperative via discussions with academic deans, program chairs, department chairs, faculty members, and Academic Affairs.
  • Provides oversight, coordination, and management of campus-wide and program-specific initiatives focused on education (e.g., Teaching Awards, Peer Facilitator, Mentoring, Quality Enhancement Plan, Academic Technologies).
  • Collaborates in program-specific and campus-wide short- and long-term strategic planning and relevant campus committees for ensuring student success in academic programs.
  • Provides advanced campus level consultation and leadership to individual faculty, faculty groups, program directors, department chairs, and other groups for educational initiatives, curriculum and instruction, academic technologies, and online/distance education.
  • Organizes and leads efforts of individual faculty members, faculty groups, and academic programs that promote the scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL) through faculty consultations, communities of practice, and faculty learning communities as well as active involvement in research on teaching, participation in presentations and publications, and collaborative submission of grant proposals, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Analyzes and prioritizes the needs for faculty professional development in the areas of curriculum and curriculum design, instruction, techniques, and technologies for delivering quality courses.
  • Designs, implements, oversees, and manages professional development programs to improve faculty /staff curriculum, instruction, and academic technology knowledge and skills for effective integration of instructional design principles.
  • Identifies, assesses, implements, and supports strategies that foster a programmatic, collegiate, and campus culture that values and rewards effective teaching through active engagement with colleges, department chairs, faculty members, and relevant committees.
  • Conducts course reviews to identify instructional opportunities and analyze areas for faculty improvement.
  • Coordinates and leads the ongoing development and utilization of the CTL website.
  • Coordinates with UTM's Office of Information Technology (OIT) staff in the implementation and maintenance of enterprise-wide academic technologies and 3rd party services.
  • Coordinates with OIT in defining services and programs to support faculty use of academic technologies.
  • Provides leadership in identifying emerging technologies and the selection of appropriate technologies for UTM.
  • Coordinates support and assistance to faculty in the use of academic technologies and multimedia development.
  • Collaborates with OIT and with vendors to best adapt services and resources to meet the needs of the campus.
  • Serves as the Director for the CTL, providing operational support and a central point of contact for the campus.
  • Coordinates the development of policies and operational procedures for resource utilization, CTL communications and marketing, academic technologies, online and distance education, and academic technology vendor services.
  • Collaborates with the CTL staff and other relevant individuals and groups on campus to set, manage, and evaluate priorities for the CTL.
  • Supervises, supports, coordinates, develops, and evaluates CTL staff.
  • Identifies and supports CTL staff professional development opportunities.
  • Ensures the ongoing relevance and success of the CTL through engagement in ongoing program evaluation and continuous improvement, guiding the work of faculty affiliates, and supervising CTL staff.
  • Manages CTL budget and funding to best support the needs and responsibilities of the CTL.
  • Coordinates, collects meaningful data and develops appropriate reports for campus and Academic Affairs.
  • Maintains current teaching status, teaching at least one course every academic year.
  • Submits at least one peer-reviewed presentation, publication or grant annually, preferably with colleagues.
  • Researches and evaluates new and emerging curriculum and instruction and teaching strategies applicable to UTM's faculty and/or students.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • 3 years of teaching in higher education to include experience developing and delivering courses.
  • 3 years experience providing faculty development and support for academic technologies to higher education faculty and staff.
  • Teaching experience as instructor of record or other primary faculty in courses within a higher education environment.
  • Experience working with faculty across a variety of disciplines and ranks.
  • 3 years of supervisory experience.
  • 3 years of leading teams supporting faculty with course design and development and in the integration of technology in teaching and learning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree
  • Experience with academic program development, delivery, assessment, and evaluation.
  • Online teaching experience within a higher education environment.
  • Faculty development experience in higher education.
  • Experience with both Windows and Mac platforms, Learning Management Systems and educational technologies.
