Lab Specialist employees provide technical lab support by performing complex lab and research related tasks. They act as specialists on research methods and equipment functions specific to investigations. They have the authority to adapt methods and procedures to meet the needs of research. They are distinguished from Lab Technicians by the types and duration of assignments, as well as the skills and expertise necessary to serve as resources on non-routine problems. Lab Specialist employees perform daily activities without supervision; their longer-term assignments require greater oversight. Lab Specialist employees often train others on work processes and policies.
The Department of Environmental Sciences is seeking a full-time lab specialist to support an aquatic ecosystem research project. Research involves working with a team of students and faculty in whole lake manipulations to study ecological resilience. The Lab Specialist will be responsible for high frequency sampling of environmental conditions using a sensor array. The Lab Specialist will also lead synoptic sampling and provide supervision to undergraduate assistants.
This individual will be on-site at University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center located in northern Michigan for 6 months in years 1 and 2 of the project to conduct the field portion of the study. Housing will be provided while at the research station. Work is done in a modern laboratory building and at nearby lakes located on the Notre Dame property. During the off-season, the technician will process samples, conduct data analysis, and perform the zooplankton counting at the Principal Investigator’s lab at the University of Virginia.
