Job Summary:

The Finance Director is an essential member of the WPM Leadership team.

They will oversee the financial operations and strategy of WPM and a team of finance professionals supporting the work of Wisconsin Public Radio and PBS Wisconsin.

This is a role for someone who takes pride in a balanced ledger with the skill to lead people to excellence.

The Finance Director will plan, develop, and implement strategic financial goals, priorities, policies, and procedures across multiple finance functional areas to ensure efficient financial resource deployment for the organization.

The Finance Director develops budgets, manages and monitors actual results, and manages automated accounting systems. They will provide counsel to the Director of WPM in efficient and effective use of financial resources. They'll consult with administrative units to encourage the use of best practices for compliant, efficient reporting.

The Finance Director will coordinate financial reporting and audit activities with WPM's partner state agency, the Wisconsin Educational Communications Board. They will collaborate with central UW Madison financial offices including Business Services and Madison Budget Office to ensure compliance with GAAP, GASB, campus, state and grant regulations.

The Finance Director advises, supports and coordinates with the affiliated 501(c)(3) organizations providing financial support to PBS Wisconsin and Wisconsin Public Radio.

The Finance Director reports to the Executive Director of Wisconsin Public Media.

You'll join a group of TV, radio, and online media professionals who are fun-loving, hard working, and mission driven.

Responsibilities:

Plans, develops, and implements financial strategic goals, priorities, policies, and procedures across multiple finance functional areas to ensure efficient financial resource deployment. Develops budgets, manages automated accounting systems, and provides consultation to administrative units to encourage the use of best practices for compliant, efficient reporting.
  • 10% Directs strategic planning initiatives and establishes objectives for multiple finance functional areas to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, and staffing resources and alignment with the strategic plan
  • 5% Determines personnel needs and the personnel resource allocation plan
  • 35% Oversees, reviews, develops, recommends, and implements policies and procedures for internal and external financial reporting, budgeting and financial operations
  • 15% Participates in the development, maintenance, and monitoring of automated financial information systems and budgets, and disseminates updates and results to leadership when appropriate
  • 15% Serves as a divisional representative and subject matter expert to institutional leadership and internal and external stakeholders providing financial direction and information, fostering collaborative relationships across multiple functional areas, and representing the interests of the division
  • 10% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 10% Advises and supports affiliated organizations that provide financial support to PBS Wisconsin and Wisconsin Public Radio

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree

Field of accounting preferred.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience leading a team in a complex, changing financial environment
  • Experience leading the development and implementation of financial strategy
  • Experience with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Experience working with accounting systems including integration of best practices into business processes and workflows

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in project management skills
  • Financial management experience with multiple related entities
  • Financial management experience in public media or a university, governmental or non-profit organization
  • Experience overseeing compliance with state or federal regulatory recordkeeping and audit processes
  • Experience with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and their application to public media, governmental or non-profit organizations

License/Certification:

Preferred
CPA - Certified Public Accountant

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
