Job Summary:

The Scene Studio Props Director is responsible for organizing, locating, acquiring or fabricating, and maintenance of all props related to University Theatre productions. They will oversee and instruct students working in the Scene Studio.

Responsibilities: Teaches the quiz, tutorial, discussion or lab section(s) of a course or assists in the development of materials or programs under the direction of an academic staff or faculty member. May perform the same work as a Teaching Assistant, but is not a UW student.
  • 40% Facilitates classroom and/or laboratory instruction for one or more courses including assessment of student performance
  • 10% Assists with the development of instructional design and curriculum relevant to a course of instruction under the direction of an academic staff or faculty member
  • 40% Serves as an initial point of contact for students as it relates to specific course or series content and expectations
  • 10% Attends Design meetings, and works in coordination with and maintains timely communication with the production team.
Tasks:
  • Assists the Scene Studio Supervisor in the supervision and instruction of students in the Scene Studio, prop shop, theater spaces, and prop storage areas
  • Develops prop lists, and documentation for all props in University Theater productions as determined in coordination with the Scenic Designer, Director, and Stage Manager
  • Locates, acquires, fabricates and maintains props in a timely fashion for productions independently and in coordination with student crews
  • Purchases props and materials and tracks show related prop expenses on University Purchasing Card
  • Attends rehearsals as specified by the Scene Studio Supervisor, including evening and weekend technical rehearsals
  • Attends design and production meetings as specified by the Scene Studio Supervisor and communicates regularly with other members of the production team regarding props needs and progress, with emphasis on timely communication and feedback
  • Assists in the daily operations of the Scene Studio, theater spaces, and prop shop
  • Assists in maintaining tools, supplies, and work spaces in a safe and orderly manner
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Scenic Studio Supervisor

Qualifications:

A strong candidate will have: proven organizational skills, a minimum of several years experience in props, including artistic work in design and material construction and paint, demonstrated ability to fabricate and acquire props, professional props experience, previous teaching and /or experience working with students, and knowledge of historical period styles,

Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 60% - 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 18 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding

Salary:

Minimum $37,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

Additional Information:

This position is paid on a salary basis, with payroll issued every other Thursday. It will be a 100% position, with limited flexibility on work days and times. It is a terminal position expected to go through August 16, 2025. The person hired for this position will be eligible to apply for health and other benefits, and can expect a pleasant and respectful work environment. This position maybe be extended or made renewable if funding and need are available.
