INTRODUCTION:


The department of University Health and Counseling at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a Medical Assistant (HS021).


This position will be 0.82 FTE annually. The anticipated schedule for this position is listed below.

Mid-August thru mid-December = 5days/week (17 weeks)
Mid-December thru mid-May = 4days/week (22 weeks)
Mid-May thru Mid-August = 3 days/week (13weeks)

Weekdays only; No holidays or weekends.


JOB DUTIES:


The position participates as a team member in overall activities for University Health and Counseling Services. Areas of responsibility include Patient Care, Clinic, Administrative Support, Health Service Reception/Medical Records, Laboratory, and Health Education. Reporting to the Health Services Director, this position assists in maintaining a well-stocked clinic, collects vital signs, patient history, and specimens; performs basic laboratory tests, administers injections and medications under supervising clinician direction to ensure the proper care of patients; attain and maintain technological/computer skills and participate in continuing education to maintain proficiency in Medical Assistant duties and as a UHCS team member.
Job Responsibilities:

¿ Performs routine vital signs and basic tests, reviews patient history, assists with minor procedures and collection of specimens, and administers medications as directed by a supervising clinician
¿ Collects, prepares, and delivers specimens for laboratory analysis; Performs phlebotomy and waived lab testing
¿ Prepares and cleans examination rooms, instruments, and equipment for specific procedures
¿ Orders, stocks and inventories general clinic supplies
¿ Documents into the electronic medical record all cares and communications
¿ Performs administrative duties such as scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, assisting patients information and answering basic medical questions
¿ Assisting with reproductive care visits as needed - including birth control and emergency contraception dissemination.
¿ Participate in campus activities to serve students and advertise clinic services


QUALIFICATIONS:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Educational background as a Medical Assistant or has demonstrated experience and work in that role at an outpatient clinic
  • Certification or license as a Medical Assistant, or is eligible for certification/license
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Outpatient clinic experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks and adapt to change
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion under a variety of complex rules and regulations
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to stand/walk for up to eight hours per/day required.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, twist, assist patient in turning; assist patient in arising from exam table required.
  • Ability to see at near, mid and far range required.
  • Ability to speak and hear in person and on the telephone.
  • Ability to push wheelchair patients required. Ability to assist patient in rising from, transferring and returning to wheelchair required.
  • Ability to work independently under a variety of complex rules and regulations.
  • Ability to handle crisis situations in a sensitive manner.
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people with diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.
