JOB TITLE:

Research Scientist - School of Computing

JOB PURPOSE:

The School of Computing at the University of Wyoming invites applications for research scientists in different areas and applications of applied computing, data science and computational science. Research scientists will provide the capacity and capability for the School of Computing to advance research and learning across the University of Wyoming's academic and scholarly disciplines through the use and development of innovative, new, and critical computing technologies and approaches, and through the pursuit of external funding.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

School of Computing research scientists will advance research and learning across the University of Wyoming's academic and scholarly disciplines through the use and development of innovative, new, and critical computing technologies and approaches (including but not limited to HPC, AI/ML, quantum computing, cybersecurity, blockchain, big data analytics, scientific workflow, VR/AR). Research scientists at the School of Computing will grow, and where appropriate provide leadership and strategic direction to, the school's interdisciplinary research in applied computing and foster growth through strategic research opportunities and collaborations with internal and external partners. Research scientist appointments at the University of Wyoming will be made at the Assistant, Associate or Senior level, depending on experience and expertise as outlined in the University of Wyoming regulations for academic professionals.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF COMPUTING:

Established in 2022, the School of Computing has a mission to position the University of Wyoming as a national leader in computational and digital research, education, and engagement; to be a computational hub for students, faculty, staff, community, and external partners; and to serve as a steward, supporter, and developer of digital skills and computational thinking for all. The school is currently incubated in the College of Engineering but will soon emerge as an independent academic unit that will collaborate with all University of Wyoming colleges. The school is currently hiring and recruiting faculty both from the University of Wyoming and via international searches and developing new undergraduate programs and offering for students. Student programs will have an emphasis on experiential learning and the attainment of competencies in computing.

The School of Computing focuses on applications of computing and collaborates with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

The School of Computing will capitalize on extensive computing assets at the University of Wyoming, including the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center, the Advanced Research Computing Center, the Wyoming GIS Center, the Center for Blockchain and Digital Innovation, and the Shell 3D Visualization Center. The School of Computing benefits from a deep involvement with the Wyoming Innovation Partnership through which it will develop initiatives for statewide impact in partnership with Wyoming's Community Colleges.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Play a key role in the startup phase of developing a new School of Computing.
  • Work productively to advance computing application in a broad range of disciplines, including the arts, humanities, and social sciences in addition to STEM fields.
  • Partner directly with faculty, staff, and students to play a leading role in projects that effectively and efficiently use cyberinfrastructure (e.g., compute clusters, visualization facilities, scientific software, data management, etc.) at the UW Advanced Research Computing Center, NCAR Wyoming Supercomputer Center, as well as national computing centers provided by the NSF, DOE and other federal agencies.
  • Improve researcher productivity through providing optimized computational and data workflows.
  • Lead the research, analysis, deployment and potentially extension of new applications and innovative use of cutting-edge computing technologies.
  • Work with School of Computing partners including industry and community colleges.
  • Provide a high level of productive, courteous, and team-based interaction with partner scientists.
  • Write, publish, and present papers at national and international conferences.
  • Lead and/or assist in developing and writing proposals to secure external funding.
REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MS in a relevant field that includes significant use of applied computing
  • At least three years of proven experience in applied computing including at least one area of new or critical computing technology or approaches.
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of multiple programming languages, preferably both at a high level (Python, Matlab, Julia, R, etc) and low-level (C , C, Fortran, C#, etc)
  • Demonstrated experience in writing articles and delivering presentations, tutorials or training at conferences, professional settings or other venues.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and team collaboration skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary subject-matter researchers and students.
  • Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the university's continuing commitment to diversity and inclusive learning and research.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. in a computing field or in the innovative application of computing in any scholarly field.
  • Experience using modern software engineering practices on large-scale real-world applications.
  • Demonstrated experience in real-world application or tool development including experience in the use of important software frameworks in relevant areas of computing expertise.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating across disciplines with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Project management of the full lifecycle of a software product including awareness of minimum viable model and overall business considerations.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to mentor undergraduate and/or graduate students, and the development and delivery of training material.
  • Experience in proposal development and the procurement of external funding.
  • Experience in successfully leading, monitoring, motivating, and supervising a team
