Georgia Southwestern State University invites applications for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, with the responsibility for directing the operations of the College. The College, with approximately 50 full-time faculty, includes the Departments of Biology; Chemistry, Geology and Physics; Mathematics; English and Modern Languages; History and Political Science; Music, Communications, and Emerging Media; Psychology and Sociology; and Visual Arts. The Dean reports to the Provost / Vice President of Academic Affairs. The Dean is responsible for effective leadership in achieving annual goals, strategic planning, program coordination, fiscal and personnel management, quality assurance, and overall supervision of the College of Arts and Sciences.
The successful candidate will
Develops and implements policies and procedures.
Recruits, supervises, and oversees the evaluation of college faculty by department chairs; evaluates department chairs and associate dean as applicable; works with department chairs to identify staffing needs; makes recommendations to the Provost /Vice President for Academic Affairs on matters
related to hiring, promotion, tenure, and terms of employment.
Promotes faculty scholarship, professional development, and institutional and community service; supervises, promotes, and evaluates professional development for college staff.
Resolves problems with faculty, staff, and students.
Conducts meetings of the college faculty for the purposes of planning, data collection, and reporting. Maintains roster of part-time faculty; develops advertisements and screens applicants; makes hiring decisions.
Directs development and budget management efforts. (20%)
Manages and administers the college budget; meets with department chairs to prioritize budget requests.
Leads and participates in resource planning. Manages college expenditures.
Oversees curriculum development and accreditation processes. (25%)
Oversees curriculum development, delivery of instruction, and assessment and evaluation of programs; reviews program annual reports.
Plans and prepares the scheduling of classes in collaboration with other deans, faculty, and other parties.
Manages accreditation and reaccreditation processes.
Manages program reviews, including student outcomes and continuous improvement reviews.
Collaborates with internal and external partners. (20%)
Collaborates with other Deans and Chairs on university-wide programs. Represents the college and the university to a variety of external constituents. Participates in student recruitment events
Serves on a variety of college and university committees.
Engages in scholarly activities 5%
Fosters academic professionalism through participating in professional organizations, engaging in research, publishing scholarly works, and/or through other appropriate methods.
Teaches courses in the incumbent’s academic discipline as required
Performs related duties 5%
