The University System of Georgia (USG) is comprised of 26 higher education institutions as well as the University System Office (USO). Within the USO, our administrative operations are primarily housed in the Trinity Washington Building located in downtown Atlanta. Our Information Technology Services (ITS) division is located in Athens. The University System of Georgia Shared Services Center (SSC) is located in Sandersville. The Georgia Public Library System is located in Atlanta. The Georgia Archives is located in Morrow. The State of Georgia Records Center is located in Austell.

Job Summary

Supporting the mission of the Georgia Public Library Service, the PINES Bibliographic Services Specialist will be primarily responsible for the maintenance and quality control of the PINES bibliographic database. This includes regular oversight and investigation into bibliographic issues that impact PINES library users' and staff's ability to locate, maintain and circulate materials. Working in conjunction with the PINES Bibliographic Projects Manager, participates and identifies other projects that are beneficial to the health of the bibliographic database. Responsible for maintaining the PINES cataloging documentation regarding original and copy cataloging policies and procedures. Participates in the open source Evergreen community.

Responsibilities

  • Performs quality control and maintenance of bibliographic records, including electronic resource records, in the PINES database to maintain PINES bibliographic database integrity (55%)
  • Contributes and participates in special and ongoing projects to the PINES bibliographic database (15%)
  • Maintains and updates PINES documentation regarding copy and original cataloging procedures (10%)
  • Participates in the Evergreen open source community (10%)
  • Participates in the evolution of commercial vendors' cataloging ability and coordinates outsourcing procedures among PINES libraries, vendors and OCLC (5%)
  • Attends seminars, conferences, job-related training and other staff development training programs. May serve on committees and task forces (5%)

Required Qualifications

  • MLS (Master's in Library or Information Science)
  • 5 or more years experience working with library cataloging
  • Experience with RDA, MARC21, and OCLC WorldCat

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Evergreen ILS
  • Experience with PINES policies and procedures

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of MARC bibliographic standards
  • Skill in decision making and problem solving
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Ability to operate a variety of software programs
  • Ability to effectively prioritize work load
  • Ability to effectively multi-task
