Assistant Director for Career Services - College of Fine and Applied Arts

The College of Fine and Applied Arts is now accepting applications for an Assistant Director for Career Services to lead, develop, and deliver programs focused on career mentoring and preparation for students in the college’s variety of undergraduate general and pre-professional degrees. The Assistant Director will work with staff and faculty at campus, college, and unit levels to facilitate discipline-specific student engagement opportunities with potential employers across alumni, industry partners, and regional organizations while also supporting the broad orientation of FAA students to practices associated with professional employment, from portfolio development and job application to position negotiation, as well as internships and entrepreneurial ventures.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Career Advising & Engagement

  • Provide individual counseling, occupational information, and job search strategies for students of all majors in FAA.
  • Create and deliver presentations about career services subjects to students and other stakeholder, as appropriate.
  • Build strong working relationships with FAA units and their faculty and staff to determine ongoing need, marketing of events, and to maintain active partnerships.
  • Participate in career fairs, FAA recruitment events, and other University events that increase visibility and awareness of programming and services offered.
  • Work in close cooperation with FAA units and Advancement/Alumni staff to plan and present career-related workshops and programs; develop and coordinate events and activities.
  • Develop strategic relationships with community members, alumni, and industry partners for internships, employment opportunities, and other career-related events.
  • Serve as a resource for current and emerging trends in career development and career-related issues for performing, environmental, and visual art students, and disseminate that knowledge as appropriate to stakeholders and students.
  • Serve as the College’s representative on the campus-wide Career Services Council and other university committees as requested.

Administration

  • Manage internal employment postings for student labor in FAA-related fields.
  • Develop, write, and edit material for print and online resources and the college career website.
  • Manage the collection of required data and oversee related databases.
  • Conduct needs assessments and surveys, collect and report on data related to service delivery, and assess outcomes.
  • Work with College Associate and Assistant Deans to formulate and implement policies and procedures essential to achieving program goals.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of career services, including the recruitment, supervision, and training of graduate students and other seasonal student workers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • A total of one (1) year (12 months) in education, training and/or work experience in providing career mentoring and planning services in a college or university setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree.
  • Experience in delivering career services for students in the arts.
  • Experience in presentation, desktop publishing, and database applications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of career counseling skills, including job search strategies and labor market trends.
  • The ability to establish effective working relationships with staff of all levels, faculty, employers, and alumni.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Well-developed organizational skills.
  • An understanding and ability to work with and serve individuals with diverse backgrounds and interests.

Appointment Information:

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Salary is commensurate with experience.
