The Civil and Environmental Engineering department in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for an Associate Director of Research position. This position is responsible for supporting faculty in proposal developing, pursuing grant opportunities, implementing research programs, and in coordinating pre- and post-award activities to ensure grant success.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with and support faculty in developing research teams, and proposal and program development.

· Work with and support faculty in research development, management and team coordination including reporting duties.

· Work with and support junior faculty in prospecting funding opportunities, initiate contacts with program managers at funding agencies.

· Lead fiscal operations, monitoring subcontracts, preparing reports for the awarded federal grants and awards from other sponsors.

· Work with and support faculty in development of broader impact activities such as education, diversity and inclusion, and knowledge transfer.

· Lead grant implementation through compliance with federal and University policies.

· Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

· Master’s degree in engineering, science, education, management, or another related field.

· Experience in organizing and providing comprehensive support to faculty including proposal development, writing and coordination of multi-discipline and multi-institutional groups.

· A record of prior involvement in implementing and operating large research projects and center activities.

· Some experience working with funding agencies.

· Some experience working with industry in sponsored translational research activities.


Preferred Qualifications:


· PhD degree in STEM, including STEM Education, or another related field.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • In-depth understanding of proposal preparation and submission processes.
  • Familiarity with major federal funding agencies
  • Ability to understand engineering and/or scientific research programs, gained through experience and/or training.
  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, and procedures for research administration in an academic environment (e.g. personnel, grants and contracts, intellectual property rights, and other appropriate areas).
  • Able to prioritize and accomplish multiple duties simultaneously and work with researchers in an academic setting.
  • Proven organizational skills and an attention to detail.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.


APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Employees hired into this position will be expected to work onsite on a full-time basis. Work authorization is not available for this position.
