Education and Engagement Specialist


Japan House

The Japan House is now accepting applications for an Education and Engagement Specialist to design and implement Japan House's university offerings and community engagement initiatives. This position has an integral role in establishing collaboration with community organizations and university departments in developing in-person, off-site, and online programs.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide instruction for ARTJ courses. Contribute ideas for Japan House’s scholarly and public programs.
  • Develop courses in Japanese arts and aesthetics.
  • Engage in outreach initiatives to share Japanese arts and aesthetics with K-12 and non-university audiences.
  • Coordinate and participate in public outreach events for the community.
  • Work collaboratively with Japan House staff, volunteers, and local community to achieve Japan House’s mission and goals.
  • Develop grant proposals and analytic reports.
  • Manage the online retail store and Japan House website (Craft CMS).
  • Assist with social media needs (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, EventBrite) to support academics and public engagement.
  • Maintain a database and manage a collection of artifacts related to Japanese culture.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree preferably in related field to the position. Three years of experience that includes teaching and engagement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and demonstrated knowledge of the Urasenke School of Tea.
  • Practical experience in education, social engagement, and community programming.
  • Experience developing programming and courses for K-12 and university audiences.
  • Experience with social media (such as Instagram and Facebook), as well as learning management systems (Canvas).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of special collections care and handling.
  • Ability to work with technology for hybrid and online learning experiences.
  • Demonstrated excellence in planning, organizational, project management, and time management skills.
  • Excellent technical writing skills illustrated by examples of work that reflect accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to seek out and apply to appropriate grants to support programming.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Access).
  • Excellent detail-oriented, organizational, and administrative skills to operate effectively in a fast-paced, multi-faceted work environment.
  • Proven ability to manage projects within established deadlines.
  • Ability to multi-task, while coping with numerous interruptions.
  • Flexibility to adapt to sudden changes in planning and activities.
  • Knowledge of the University of Illinois organization, structure, policies, procedures, activities, and programs.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. Salary is commensurate with experience.
