SHORT DESRIPTION OF POSITION:

Full-time, 100% 12-month appointment. Primary responsibilities will include teaching equine courses in the Department of Animal Sciences and managing the University of Illinois Department of Animal Sciences horse farm.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

The successful applicant is expected to teach (55% effort) courses related to horse management and handling, equine science, foal watch, and contribute to other courses as appropriate (e.g., Introduction to Animal Sciences). Other expectations (45% effort) include management and operations of the horse farm and other duties as assigned.

Teaching

1. Teach ANSC 206 (Horse Management) Fall Semester.

2. Teach ANSC 306 (Equine Science) Spring Semester.

3. Teach Equine Section of ANSC 100 (Introduction to Animal Sciences) Fall & Spring Semester.

4. Teach ANSC 103 (Working with Farm Animals) Fall & Spring Semester

5. Develop and teach ANSC 199 (Foal Watch) (Spring Semester).

6. Service related to the department’s undergraduate program (e.g., committees, advise RSO, etc…)

7. Provide teaching support for other courses within the department using horses.

8. Other duties as assigned to enhance the mission of the department.

Equine Farm Management

1. Oversee and perform the daily operations of the equine unit.

2. Maintain fiscal responsibility of the unit including all record-keeping for the unit. This may include, but is not limited to inventory, billing, treatments, and contracts.

3. Provide day-to-day supervision of personnel, and develop, implement, and document training for employees. Maintain a robust research safety program.

4. Develop and maintains written Institutional Animal Care and Use (IACUC) protocol for the production and housing of equines at the unit.

5. Maintain or coordinate proper service and repairs on unit equipment

6. Serve as main point of contact to communicate with inside/outside clients on all questions related to the equine unit.

7. Coordinate the purchase or acquisition of feed, hay, and other supplies, in a fiscally responsible way, while abiding to the procurement policies of the university and state.

8. Provide proper care, including health and nutrition programs. Work with veterinary professionals when needed.

9. Other duties as assigned to enhance the mission of the department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

Required: Master of Science degree (Instructor) or Ph.D. (Lecturer) in Animal Science or related field

Experience

Required: Demonstrated teaching effectiveness and course management using in-person and/or online formats. Familiarity with instructional technology and knowledge of equine. Ability to work efficiently in a team environment. Excellent organizational skills. Good oral and written communication skills. Desire and commitment to working with students. Two years of experience with horse farm operations. Knowledge of equine breeding and foaling. Supervisory experience. Record keeping. Development of production and operations protocols. Experience in farm equipment operation such as a skid loader. Operation of a truck and trailer.

Preferred: 5 years’ experience in equine management with experience in the breeding of mares and foaling. Experience with university rules and policies on procurement. Development and execution of an operating budget. Development of IACUC protocols. Tracking of animal inventory and billing for animal services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required:Knowledge of equine management practices. Customer service skills. Ability to recognize equine behavior and illness or injury. Ability to safely load and transport horses. Ability to operate farm equipment and back trailers. Valid driver’s license. The use of programs such as Word, Excel, Adobe, and Outlook.

Preferred: Knowledge of pasture management and the ability to maintain facilities.

Environmental Demands

Some work will be required during evenings and/or weekends. When working, the employee may be exposed to a variety of environmental factors to include, but not limited to, hot or cold weather, exposure to noise and allergens, and uneven ground. In performing the functions of this position, the employee may be subjected to various mental and physical demands as well to include, but not limited to, independently traveling to and performing work at different locations, lifting and moving items that may frequently weigh up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally weigh up to seventy-five (75) pounds, and twisting, pushing and pulling movements. SALARY: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
