What are the Responsibilities of a DSP (Direct Support Professional)?
DSPs support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) by providing them with safe living environments, helping them with daily tasks, and teaching them life skills. This could include:
- Assisting in meal preparation and follow menus.
- Maintaining a sanitary environment.
- Evaluating and documenting client progress.
- Administering client medication treatments, per agency policy.
- Attending to client medical needs.
- Utilizing a basic knowledge of behavior management.
What are the requirements to become a DSP?
- No direct caregiving experience is required.
- A sincere desire to work with adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) is the most critical qualification.
- Commitment to the concept of excellent quality of life for adults with intellectual / developmental disabilities.
- Ability to communicate and work positively with adults with I/DD and their families, other community members and program staff.
- Must be literate and capable of understanding written and verbal orders.
- Must have the ability to stay calm in stressful situations and be able to respond in emergency situations at all times.
- Must be 18 years or older and eligible to work in the United States.
- Must consent to and pass a criminal background check.
- Per Federal and Oregon Health Authority mandates, Up & Out, Inc. requires staff be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the time of hire, including a booster.
Preferred Qualifications
- A valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, acceptable driving record and access to a car, is desired for some positions.
Available Shifts
- Shift A: Wednesdays 9:00a-5:00p, Thursdays 12:00p - 5:00p, Fridays 9:00a - 5:00p, Saturday Overnight 6:00 pm - 12:00 pm
- Shift B: Monday & Tuesday: 8:00am - 4:00 pm, Saturday & Sunday: 11:00 am - 7:00 pm
