Cytology Supervisor

Job Description

Fulltime Day position - will be required to work weekends and Holidays when needed

Purpose :

To direct and assure the safe and efficient operation of the Cytology Section of the Laboratory. Is responsible for the correct and expeditious reporting of all tests performed by the section.

Assures that all methodologies are current, cost-effective and pertinent. Schedules and coordinates work of subordinates.

Maintains all instruments and keeps them in good working order. Assures control of all testing by establishing a quality control program that is scrupulously and continually monitored.

Responsibilities :

• Is responsible for maintaining an inventory control system that results in an adequate supply of chemicals and reagents as needed by the department.
• Screens slides microscopically to determine if the cell types present cancer.
• Assigns specific duties to the cytotechs and cyto aides based on performance level and capability.
• Prepares preventative maintenance schedules for all equipment including the maintenance to be performed and the frequency with which it is performed.
• Evaluates the suitability and reliability of various procedures used in the department.
• Responsible for maintaining a quality control program to monitor the reliability of methods and techniques used in the department.
• Works with Laboratory Administrative Director and / or Department Director in matters concerning the departmental policy, equipment needs, budget preparation and staffing levels.
• Is able to prepare equipment needed for fine needle aspiration procedure; informs pathologist of procedure, is able to prepare smears with the pathologist and physician;

is able to stain and coverslip smeared slides on site as aspiration is being performed; sends aspiration specimen to other departments in the laboratory according to tests ordered.

• Evaluates the performance level of cytotechs and cyto aides to ascertain the need for, and extent of, retraining.
• Bachelor's Degree and CT(ASCP) certification.
• Three years as a cytotechnologist.
• Must have knowledge of cell structures and cell types, method of preparing and staining slides, function and use of laboratory equipment, medical terminology as required in the work, and practices and procedures for processing slides and for preparation and maintenance of laboratory records.
• Must be able to exercise a great deal of independent judgement in determining which cell types represent cancer, give close attention to detail for long sustained periods during all phases or work, and effectively teach and instruct others.
