Description
Purpose:
As assigned, a perfusionist performs, under the supervision of a licensed physician and according to prescribed procedures, those functions necessary for the support and treatment of the cardiopulmonary system of a patient. A perfusionist performs advanced technical work in the selection, preparation, operation, and maintenance of the heart/lung machine and accessory equipment. . The work area is primarily the operating room but the possibility exists for working throughout the hospital. Works in close cooperation with the surgical/medical team during routine and emergency procedures.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure patient safety and quality of care by developing, implementing, and monitoring policies and procedures; by adherence to organizational, departmental and outside regulatory requirements; and by monitoring operational and clinical outcomes.
- Serve as a role model of excellent clinical quality and customer service.
- Maintain and strengthen clinical and managerial competency by learning new specialties, reviewing professional publications, and participating in growth oriented developmental activities.
- Maintain appropriate supply inventory and equipment. Evaluate and transport supplies and equipment.
- Participate on one committee with patient care as the focus
- Serve as a role model of excellent clinical quality and customer service.

- Participate in a quality improvement process and report to leadership quarterly.
- Demonstrate the application of clinical perfusion skills by adhering to departmental and professional standards. Demonstrate knowledge of and proficiency with the operation and maintenance of perfusion equipment.
- Achieve financial objectives through the preparation, examination and justification of departmental budget; by monitoring expenditures and initiating corrective actions.
- Demonstrates effective instruction and supervision of students by adhering to the clinical objectives of the UPMC School of Perfusion.
- Assume leadership role meeting specific description and responsibilities of that scope of practice.
- Maintain continuing education, ABCP certification, PA license, and clinical competencies.
- Maintain competency/proficiency with laboratory equipment and processes. Understand and implement specific regulatory requirements and QA practices.
- Assume director responsibilities when deemed necessary by leadership.
- Maintain proficiency with various perfusion techniques to include hemodilution, hemofiltration, induction and reversal of hypothermia and hyperthermia, perioperative blood management, myocardial preservation, circulatory support techniques such as ECMO, VAD, and liver bypass, Responsible for the administration of medications, blood components, and anesthetic agents via the extracorporeal circuit in consultation with or under the direction of the attending physician.
- Maintain appropriate, timely, and accurate documentation of all procedures.
- Participate on the call schedule
- Maintain optimal communication, close cooperation, and consultation with attending physicians.
Qualifications
Graduation from a CAAHEP accredited school of cardiovascular perfusion or met Grandfather Clause of the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion and Pennsylvania Licensing Board.3 years of UPMC Perfusion experience required.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Certified or certification-eligible as per guidelines of the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion within 24 months of hire date.Pennsylvania licensure according to House Bills 500 and 501
