ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:

The Upper Occoquan Service Authority (UOSA) is a regional water reclamation plant serving four jurisdictions (Fairfax County, Prince William County, City of Manassas and City of Manassas Park).

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Laboratory Technician performs routine laboratory analysis of samples collected from the wastewater treatment facility. The technician is responsible for accurate, neat and organized work that must be completed on a timely basis daily. The position requires a high degree of concentration and organization of details. They are required to learn to perform tasks of progressively increasing difficulty and to eventually become proficient in the performance of the tests of the various workstations. After initial training, minimal daily supervision by Supervisor, Chemists is required.

EXAMPLE OF WORK (Illustrative Only)

  • Calibrates instruments such as balances and pH meters. Observes preventive/corrective maintenance practices, Quality Control/Quality Assurance program standards and safety precautions.
  • Accurately documents all calibrations, preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • Prepares samples and conducts tests according to standard operating procedures (SOP);
  • Assumes responsibility for calculations, quality control recoveries and reruns.
  • Follows standard UOSA laboratory procedures and safety practices.
  • Troubleshoots routine problems and takes proper steps to correct problems.
  • Performs other related tasks for the stations to which assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of an Associate degree in chemistry, biology or related field; or preferably possess a BS degree in one of the above fields from a recognizable four-year college or university. Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acceptable.
  • Must have knowledge of laboratory operating techniques and laboratory safety practices.
  • Sufficient skill to perform analysis associated with main workstations including: solids, COD, nutrients, BOD, alkalinity, conductivity, pH, turbidity, bacteriology and reagent preparation.
  • Possession of a vehicle operator’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Must be able to perform the physical requirements of position, to include extensive walking, bending, stooping, climbing of stairs and ladders, lifting and/or carrying of up to 30 pounds.
