Pay $18.00 - $20.00 / Hour
The Youth Peer Advocate (YPA) is a young adult who self-identifies as having experience with social, emotional, or behavioral health challenges as a young person, and / or has received services in any one of the child-serving systems (juvenile justice, foster care, special education, or addiction recovery).
Core Responsibilities
- Work with young people who are experiencing social, medical, emotional, developmental, substance use, and / or behavioral challenges in their home, school, placement, and / or community.
- Provide support to ensure the active participation and engagement of young people in the treatment planning process.
- Facilitate structured activities emphasizing skill-building and strategies necessary to move forward in meeting their personal, individualized life goals.
- Mentor and develop self-advocacy skills and provide support in their transition into adulthood.
- Educate through shared experiences utilizing a person-centered approach.
- Provide transportation as required to carry out the goals and services of the child’s service plan.
- Participate in activities as part of the treatment team that may include meetings, training and committees.
- Ensure positive and effective communication and cooperation within and between department, division, family and community personnel.
Qualifications
- Applicants must be between 18-30 years of age to obtain YPA certification.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Youth Peer Advocate (YPA) credentialed or provisional status to be attained within 90-days of employment.
- Must have a valid New York State Driver’s License.
- For individuals not yet certified at the time of hire must self-identify as a person who has first-hand experience with social, emotional, medical, developmental, substance use, and / or behavioral challenges and be able to submit two letters of recommendation to Families Together New York State (FTNYS) to support application for Youth Peer Advocate.
