Summary of Position:
The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for accurately and efficiently processing and reporting samples using laboratory equipment and quickly reporting any problems to management. This includes assessing data and results, monitoring quality performance, and ensuring that laboratory processes align with standard operating procedures.
Qualifications and Skills:
Safety: Some risk of exposure to chemicals, biological substances, sharps and/or scientific instruments capable of causing bodily injury if used improperly. We comply with OSHA standards regarding Bloodborne pathogens, Safety Needle Act, Chemical Hygiene Plan in addition to maintaining robust safety & training programs.

Qualifications and Skills:
- High School Diploma required
- Bachelor’s degree in a life science and at least 3 years of high complexity molecular diagnostic laboratory testing in a CLIA or CAP laboratory. Experience must be sufficient for the candidate to have developed a high level of competency when performing analytical sample processing steps and all other supporting functions
- OR
- Master’s degree in a life science and at least 2 years of high complexity molecular diagnostic laboratory testing in a CLIA or CAP laboratory. Experience must be sufficient for the candidate to have developed a high level of competency when performing analytical sample processing steps and all other supporting functions
- Experience in molecular diagnostic testing performing Urinary Tract Infection and Antibiotic Resistance testing preferred
- MB (ASCP) or other relevant certifications preferred, but not required
- Knowledge of RT-PCR (qPCR) as performed in a CLIA or CAP clinical laboratory.
- Knowledge of basic clinical laboratory skills, operations, and set-up
- Knowledge of occupational safety and health rules and regulations
- Exceptional understanding of the elements that support high quality work processes and quality assurance in a molecular biology clinical laboratory
- Knowledge of CLIA regulations or CAP requirements
- B.S. in Clinical Laboratory Science preferred
- A.S. in Clinical Laboratory Science acceptable
- Minimum of one - two years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting
- Experience in Hematology required
- MLS/CLS/MT/MLT certification (ASCP or equivalent)
- Basic knowledge of Windows Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
- Basic knowledge of data/result entry and patient demographics
- Proficiency in working with an LIS System
- Ability to approach problems/decisions analytically
- Ability to perform and document quality control and instrument maintenance
- Excellent communication and verbal skills
- Ability to prioritize workload, multi-task, and interact effectively with all levels of staff, management, and healthcare providers (physicians, advance practitioners, and nurses)
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Able to construct reports or summaries of laboratory data as needed
- Receives, prepares, and evaluates patient specimens for analysis and performs technical procedures with accuracy and precision, meeting the standards of all accrediting/regulatory agencies in a timely manner
- Operates laboratory instruments and equipment and performs equipment maintenance according to the laboratory’s standard operating procedures
- Recognizes unusual patient results and identifies problems in analytical procedures/systems; responds with appropriate management notification and investigation and/or corrective action
- Troubleshoots assays and equipment which fail to perform adequately
- Operates in a manner that maintains compliance with a CLIA or CAP quality management plan
- Creates and maintains updated SOPs
- Follows established safety guidelines and maintains the cleanliness of the laboratory
- Keeps a meticulous and organized record of specimens, tests, instrument logs, and technical analyses
- Maintains stringent standards for quality, identifying any issues which might adversely impact the quality of test results and/or employee safety, and communicates these to the appropriate management representatives for resolution
- Participates in activities required to support all necessary licensure and accreditation for the clinical laboratory, including assisting with quality management functions and on-site inspections of the laboratory
- Responsible for maintaining updated understanding and knowledge of the methods employed in the laboratory and the use of the resulting information by physicians through continuing education activities
- Identifies potential adjustments to operational procedures that would increase efficiency and relays these to management for consideration.
- Accurately documents and maintains all records for equipment and instruments
- Supports the administrative functions of the laboratory, as required
- All other reasonable duties, as assigned
