JOB DESCRIPTION: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

  • REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to Nursing Director or Administrator

  • INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS

Communicates with Patients, Families, Nursing Staff, Clinical Office Advanced Practice Providers and Physicians.

  • MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Specimen processing, test performance and reporting test results.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Follows laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.

Responsible for remaining current on laboratory methods and trends, as well as initiating tests procedures and methodology.

Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.

Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.

Follows the laboratory’s established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.

Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the laboratory consultant, nursing director, administrator or laboratory director.

Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.

Confers with laboratory consultant regarding procedure, regulations, safety, etc. on an ongoing basis.

Evaluates new instrument specifications for capability and application for use.

Supervises the revision of laboratory manuals, policies, etc.

Manages laboratory services in accordance with clinic and governmental standards.

Ensures accurate and appropriate completion of laboratory tests.

Coordinates ordering and receiving laboratory supplies.

Collects data, prepares reports, answers correspondence, and complies statistics for administrative and regulatory purposes.

Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.

Maintains patient confidentiality.

Adheres to the in-person attendance policies per specific department.

All duties and responsibilities must be adhered to in a manner that complies with all Federal and State laws, UPC/USC standards of conduct and compliance plan and centers for Medicare and Medicaid condition for coverage.

During a Designated Health Emergency the following become an Essential Duty:

Disinfect surfaces that patients and staff members come in contact with during the course of business. This will entail using an approved disinfection agent to wipe off countertops, clipboards, exam room chairs, etc.

  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no Supervisory Responsibilities.

  • COMPETENCIES

Knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures and practices to evaluate department and recommend improvement.

Knowledge of equipment and testing to perform quality control checks and to determine needs and evaluate equipment for purchase.

Knowledge of medical terminology to interact with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results.

Knowledge of safety requirements to provide instructions and to recognize and correct hazardous conditions.

Skill in performing laboratory test to provide in clinic.

Skill in writing reports and preparing correspondence.

Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.

Skill in identifying and resolving problems.

Ability to evaluate utilization statistics and other data and make program recommendations.

Ability to speak clearly.

  • EDUCATION, SKILL AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED

Graduate of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician School or three years experience as a laboratory technician preferred.

  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Able to stand for most of the shift.

Pay: $15.00 - $19.00 per hour
