Environmental DNA Laboratory Technician
Job Description: Environmental DNA (eDNA) is DNA sloughed from organisms into the surrounding environment (such as skin cells from fish into a stream). eDNA is a powerful conservation tool for defining the distribution of endangered, rare, and invasive species. We are seeking a laboratory technician to aid in sterilization and building of eDNA sampling kits used for projects related to aquatic wildlife conservation.
Responsibilities include:
1.) Sterilization of materials used for eDNA sampling and lab materials used for DNA extraction
2.) Assembling eDNA sampling kits
3.) Sending out eDNA sampling kits and water pumps to collaborators
4.) Maintaining inventory of supplies and maintaining a clean work area
In addition, the technician must have attention to detail, take detailed notes, be organized, and work independently. This lab position will not involve fieldwork. The position provides valuable experience in laboratory procedures/equipment and rigorous scientific methodology. There is potential to expand the responsibilities (i.e. data entry, tissue or eDNA extractions, genetic analyses) if exceptional performance is shown. This position is sponsored by The National Genomics Center for Wildlife and Fish Conservation (NGC) at the US Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station. Work will occur at Rocky Mountain Research Station building at the south end of campus.
Scheduling is flexible, but all work must occur during USFS building hours: 8:30am-5:00pm, Mon-Fri. Starting wage is $15/hr, with potential for wage increase upon exceptional performance.
Qualifications:
Applicants are preferred to have completed Cellular and Molecular Biology or related course work. Competitive applicants will be individuals who are responsible, punctual, and able to communicate and work well with others. Attention to detail is a must. Experience in laboratory settings is strongly preferred. Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
