Summary

A successful candidate in this position will lead a team of highly specialized protective force, which is responsible for the safe and secure transportation of classified and or hazardous nuclear material.


Responsibilities

As a Nuclear Materials Courier (SRF), you will:

  • Serves as a member of a Special Response Force (SRF) team tasked with leading the pursuit and recovery of cargo unlawfully removed from an Office of Secure Transportation (OST) shipment's custody and control.
  • Responsible for leading all Courier personnel assigned to work under the employee's command on specific transportation missions (convoys).
  • Leads all Courier personnel on specific transportation missions (convoys) engaging in the safe and secure transportation of nuclear weapons, nuclear weapon components, and/or special nuclear material.
  • Identifies and obtains resources needed to accomplish individual mission requirements; develop and execute operational, security, and tactical plans for assigned convoys.
  • Directs and coordinates the work of all agents while on mission operations, assess employee competencies, and recommend training as necessary to ensure that staff capabilities are consistent with mission requirements.

    • The work of this position involves handling sensitive and dangerous materials and information critical to national defense, and therefore must be able to obtain/maintain a Q level Security Clearance.

    • Compliance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD-12) governing personal identity which will require that you provide two forms of identification.
    • This position requires Special Response Force (SRF) certification and competencies; must possess SRF certification.
    • Must possess or acquire a valid State motor vehicle operator's license; have a satisfactory driving record; be able to obtain/maintain a Commercial Driver?s License (CDL), with appropriate specialties.
    • Occasional exposure to potential dangers from explosives and radioactive and toxic materials.
    • This position is covered by the Department of Energy's Human Reliability Program (HRP) and is subject to annual physical, psychological testing and evaluation, and random drug/alcohol testing.
    • The Department of Energy requires that persons employed in courier positions meet on continuing basis its physical requirements, weapons qualifications, and first aid training requirements.
    • This position is designated as a primary position and is covered by the retirement provisions of 5 USC 8336 (c).
    • The OST Mission is performed on a 24-hour, 7 days a week basis. All employees are subject to participation in both scheduled and unscheduled emergency response exercises and events.
    • Required to carry a firearm and maintain qualifications on assigned weapons.

    Qualifications

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Demonstration Project pay band or GS grade level in the federal service, i.e., NV-02 or GS-11. Specialized experience for this position is defined as: systems level technical expertise on the functional requirements, capabilities, and operations of multiple security, safety, emergency management, and communications systems employed in the safe and secure transportation of nuclear weapons, nuclear weapons components, and special nuclear materials.

    Examples of Specialized Experience:

    • Assignments that required inspection, testing, and operation of complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic devices.
    • Inspection of shipment vehicles and cargo configuration and tie-downs.
    • Develop and lead tactical responses to specific threats.

    "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    CTAP/ICTAP candidates: To be considered "well qualified" you must meet all of the requirements as described in this section. If you are eligible for career transition assistance plans such as ICTAP or CTAP, you must meet the definition of "well qualified" which is defined as having a score of 85 or better.
