Duties
The purpose of the position is to perform work on conventional/typical preservation projects for a variety of historic structures. This entails the full gamut of types, and includes some new construction, major restoration or rehabilitation, complete stabilization, significant alteration, etc.
As a Preservationist you will:
- Use of planers, table saws, jointers, radial saws, band saws, and shapers.
- Maintain the full range of hand and power masonry tools i.e. skill saw, electric drill, router, chainsaw, sander, table saw, jointer, radial saw, bandsaw, planer, shaper, floor sander, and surfacing machines.
- Repair, reconstruct, restore, and rehabilitate masonry structures by performing work such as stabilizing or constructing foundations, walls, chimneys, fireplace, and other building elements.
- Replicate antique and highly skilled forms of craftsmanship using specialized tools.
- Assist with the inspection of historic structures/sites/landscapes on site to determine physical condition and the type and amount of maintenance required to maintain in proper condition.
- Read, interpret and apply building plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches, working drawings and building codes.
- Compute curves, arcs, tangents, and possess advanced knowledge of carpentry and masonry skills utilizing accepted trade methods and techniques.
- Use a variety of hand and power tools such as trowel, float, hammer, pick, chisel, brick saw, angle grinder, and pneumatic chisel in cutting and shaping stone and repointing, resetting, and relaying masonry.
- Select appropriate stone and mortar materials to closely match historic fabric in color, texture, and composition, with ability to apply selected materials in a manner appropriate to historic character.

Area Information:
George Washington Birthplace National Monument, located south of Colonial Beach Virginia, encompasses 550 acres of the former Popes Creek Plantation, which was where George Washington was born and is the American ancestral home of the Washington Family. In addition to a working Colonial Revival farm, visitor center, several historic structures, curatorial facility and maintenance complex, the park also has picnic grounds and a public beach. Numerous recreational activities take place in the park including fishing, kayaking, and hiking. Annual visitation to the Monument is 130,000.
Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, located in Oyster Bay, New York, is the preeminent storyteller of Theodore Roosevelt's home and family life. Operating on a year-round basis, this beautiful 83-acre site features two historic homes, multiple historic farm structures, fields and orchards, as well as a nature trail with woodlands, a salt marsh, tidal creek, and beach. Administrative, interpretative, cultural, and maintenance staff collaborate with partners and friends' groups to preserve and interpret the structures, landscape, collections, and other cultural resources associated with Theodore Roosevelt's home and ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the life and legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, his family, and the significant events associated with him at Sagamore Hill. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park was established in 1980 to "protect and interpret for the benefit, inspiration, and education of present and future generations the places where Martin Luther King, Jr. was born, where he lived, worked, and worshipped, and where he is buried." The park is located within the "Sweet Auburn" community, which served as the economic, cultural, and religious center for Atlanta's segregated African-American population from 1910 through the 1960s. The buildings on the birth home block are contributing structures in the National Historical Landscape District.

- A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.
Physical Demands: The incumbent performs work at construction sites. There is considerable physical exertion related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of various sizes, weights, and shapes. There is considerable standing, stooping, lifting, and bending. Because of the multi-faceted craft aspects of this position, work is frequently performed under structures, which requires the incumbent to work overhead or in a stretched, cramped, or awkward position. Fieldwork magnifies the physical effort required to perform the duties of this position and reflect actual restoration project environments. Incumbent is required to perform craftsman work in the investigation of historic structures and in working with other employees in restoration techniques. Inspections may require working in cramped, close quarters underneath structures or on rooftops several hundred feet above ground level. The incumbent occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh 50 pounds or more.
Working Conditions: Work is performed throughout the park, where the incumbent is subject to cuts from hand or power tools and danger from flying splinters or chips. In the shop the incumbent is exposed to noise and sawdust in the air. The presence of lead paint on historic fabric may require special knowledge and handling and the use of protective equipment in the shop or at the job site, and require special attention and the use ofsafety equipment. Work is both inside and outside, in all types of weather. The incumbent must work at elevations from sea level to above 4,000 feet. Temperatures vary from -20 to 90 degrees. Winter snow depths may vary from two to six feet with icy driving conditions involved.
