Summary
The Laundry Worker position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the VA San Diego Medical Center (VAMC) in the Environmental Management Services. The primary purpose of the This position is in the Textile Care Unit of the Environmental Services Section of Facilities Management Service.
Responsibilities
The Laundry Worker is responsible for receiving bulk lots of linens from the finishing units in the Textile Care Processing Facility and for storing the clean linens on storage shelves. Additional duties as follow:
- Makes individual orders, for clean linens for all using units from established quota sheets and preparing the order for shipment to various using units.
- Delivers linen to using units in a timely manner.
- Cleans linen delivery carts prior to stocking for distribution.
- Receives telephone calls for linen special orders from using units and delivers requested items in a timely manner.
- Delivers clean linens to using units utilizing a lightweight plastic cart.
- Receives clean uniforms, scrubs, hanging uniforms, scrubs for distribution on uniform dispensing equipment.
- Marks and/ or stencils textiles; ie. linens, uniforms, scrubs, etc.; manually or using marking equipment for identification as government property. I
- Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
- Performs other related Textile Care duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 5:30am- 1:00pm

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. The screen out element used for this announcement is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF A LAUNDRY WORKER WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION. Examples of duties include: Ability to operate in dexterity and safety; Ability to sort infectious linens by classification /degree of soil. Ability to proper handling of various infectious waste and sharps found in Medical Center linens; Ability to apply knowledge in the load and operation of wash equipment and finishing equipment, operation of a flatwork ironing systems; Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment; Ability to maintain and use physical strength and agility. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent must stand and/or walk continuously on hard surfaced floors. Incumbent is continuously bending and reaching while performing duties. Incumbent frequently lifts bundles of uniforms and linens weighing 25 pounds or more and may occasionally lift bags of linen weighing between 50 and 75 pounds, and continuously handles bulk cartons of considerable size weighing up to 50 pounds or more. Incumbent must be able to work at or above shoulder height for the processing and distributing uniforms on site and loading dock areas.
Incumbent works primarily on the clean side of the Textile Care Processing Facility. Is exposed to noise, hot and humid conditions in designated working areas and loading docks. Is exposed to gases and fumes around loading dock areas. Is exposed to hazards in working above ground level (throughout all levels of the hospital), on slippery surfaces, or in crowded.Education
