Duties

The major functions of this position may include but is not limited to:

  • Accurately perform entry, processing and filling of medication orders or prescriptions, unit dose carts and/or unit stock for scheduled and non-scheduled federal legend drugs, medical devices, over-the-counter products, and supply items.
  • Ensure deliveries of medications are made timely.
  • Drive and deliver to offsite Community Based Outpatient Clinics.
  • Establish knowledge of hospital computer systems and execute troubleshooting or technical support.
  • Prepare and maintain various logs, records, and reports.
  • Performs timely filling of automated dispensing devices and routine cleaning of equipment.
  • Prepare both sterile and non-sterile compounds based off a prescription or medication order and labels in accordance with accepted standards.
  • Utilize appropriate inventory measures such as just-in-time and inventory turns to manage pharmacy stock.
  • Monitor and report any stock discrepancies and check for outdates/expired items.
  • Participate in training Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy students, and Residents.
  • Identify areas of improvement and participates in change management and implementation.
  • Open and sort distributing contents and package mail.

Work Schedule: Primary 8:00am to 4:30pm; 9:30am to 6:00pm, with rotating holidays/weekends as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. (Creditable Experience: To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with the scope of pharmacy technician practice).
  • Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations, GS-6:
Experience: One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level, GS-5, which are: Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment; Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique; Knowledge of basic inventory procedures; and Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.
AND
Certification: National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification is required at this grade level.
AND
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's):
  • Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
  • Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
  • Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
  • Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

Driver's License Requirement: Applicants must possess a valid, unrestricted State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that they are medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely. Applicants are required to pass agency Government Vehicle Drivers physical examination.NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your driver's license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you may be required to provide a copy of your valid state-issued driver's license.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the duties of this position. Work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged periods of time, frequent twisting/turning, and bending/stooping. Frequent manipulation of IV preparation will require repeated dexterity exertion with pressure up to 20 pounds. Must be able to perform lifting/carrying, pushing, or pulling different types of equipment such as cabinets, carts or supplies weighing at minimum 50 pounds through various terrains.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
