Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The Registered Nurse is able to handle complex critically ill patients and patient situations.
  • He/she provides education to patients, families and significant others; administers medication and treatments; participates in the quality improvement process; and is attuned to the needs of adult and geriatric patients
  • Practice is based on conscious and deliberate planning utilizing critical thinking skills.
  • Provides education to patients, families and significant others; administers medications and treatments; participates in the quality improvement process; and is attuned to the needs of adult and geriatric patients.
  • The Registered Nurse communicates with the members of the interdisciplinary team and collaborates with the team for patient care.
  • Specialized nursing practice and manages clinically complex patients and situations related to patient care assignments, as well as clinical and administrative processes effecting the unit/work group/area.
  • He/she is able to function independently, is self-directed in clinical practice and career development, and is actively involved in the functions and activities of the unit/work group/team.
  • The Registered Nurse is responsible for practicing in accordance with and adhering to regulations such as the Nurse Practice Act, American Association of Critical Care Standards of Care, VHA policies and procedures, and those of outside accrediting bodies.
  • It is expected that the Registered Nurse at this grade/level provides safe, quality care to patients and have the ability and skills necessary to assume charge duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Pay: Competitive salary, regular salary increases, potential for performance awards

Conditions of Employment

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.

Preferred Experience:

1. BSN

2. Demonstrates interpersonal skills, both verbal and written

3. One to three years of experience in ICU,PCU or medical surgical preferred.

4. Dependability.

5. Demonstrates leadership ability.

6. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and off tours.

7. Computer literate.

8. Demonstrated ability to provide education to patient, family and/or significant others.

9. ACLS.

Grade Determination.
In addition to the basic qualification requirements, the grade level of Nurse (any assignment) is based on a combination of education and experience. Beyond the minimum education requirements, grade determination for appointment, advancement and promotion will be based on the following specific requirement for Nurses:

(1) Nurse I, Level 1.Education and Experience Requirement.

Diploma or associate degree in nursing with no professional nursing experience.

(2) Nurse I, Level 2.Education and Experience Requirement.

Diploma or associate degree in nursing and one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to a Nurse I, Level 1ORii Bachelor's degree in nursing and no professional nursing experience.

(3) Nurse I, Level 3.Education and Experience Requirement.

Diploma or associate degree in nursing and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which is a year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level 2.

OR

Bachelor's degree in nursing and one year of professional nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level 2.

OR

Master's degree in nursing and no professional nursing experience.

OR

Master's degree in a related field with a bachelor's degree in nursing with no professional nursing experience.

(4) Nurse II. Education and Experience Requirement.

Bachelor's degree in nursing and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which is a year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level 3.

OR

Master's degree in nursing with one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level 3.

OR

Master's degree in a related field with a bachelor's degree in nursing with one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level 3.

OR

Doctorate degree in nursing with no professional nursing experience.

OR

Doctorate degree in a related field with a master's or bachelor's degree in nursing with no professional nursing experience.

(5) Nurse III. Education and Experience Requirement.

Master's degree in nursing with two years of specialized nursing experience, one of which is equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III.

OR

Master's degree in a related field with a bachelor's degree in nursing with two years of specialized nursing experience, one of which is equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III.

OR

Doctorate degree in nursing with one year of specialized nursing experience which is equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III.

OR

Doctorate degree in a related field with a master's or bachelor's degree in nursing with one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III.

Physical Requirements:

The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center (JHQVAMC) is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, and neurological inpatients and outpatients. There is a large outpatient psychiatric population, with admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, lifting 10 pounds or more, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The RN may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The RN may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The RN must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
