Senior Optical Engineer

The Senior Optical Engineer will be part of a group focused on innovative optical systems for next generation DNA sequencing. The engineer will be responsible for design, testing, and integration in an interdisciplinary team environment. The engineer will be a self-starter, analytically oriented, with a hands-on approach to testing and integration. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Innovate novel, robust, and cost-effective optical system designs and solutions to new market challenges Design, assemble, align, test, troubleshoot, and integrate breadboards to demonstrate feasibility Collaborate with cross-functional, global teams (mechanical, electrical, software, fluidic, etc.) Collaborate with vendors to develop complex custom optical components and modules; manage vendors through specifications, statement of work contracts, and other technical interactions Juggle multiple projects while keeping up with aggressive timelines EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: PhD or MS in Engineering, Physics, or related discipline REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 5 to 10 years hands-on experience with optical instrumentation Familiarity with both component-level and system-level optical specification and design Familiarity with optical alignment methodologies and equipment Familiarity with optical test methodologies and equipment Proficiency in design and analysis using ZEMAX or similar software; familiarity with both imaging and non-imaging illumination design Strong and proactive communication and presentation skills Drive for seeing projects through to successful completion Ability to participate in cross-functional, global teams PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Familiarity with fluorescence microscopy is a plus Familiarity with opto-mechanical tolerance analysis is a plus Proficiency in SolidWorks is a plus Proficiency in MATLAB for image and data analysis is a plus Listed responsibilities are an essential, but not exhaustive list, of the usual duties associated with the position.
