POSITION OVERVIEW:
As the Controller, you will be a critical leader helping to build a highly scalable, best-in-class accounting department. You will oversee the day-to-day accounting activities, ensuring an adequate control environment. This is an opportunity for someone who can marry strong accounting skills, business acumen and strategic thinking to take on a leadership role at a high-growth business, backed by an established partnership.
The Controller will be responsible for establishing accounting policies, forecasting processes, controls, and reporting systems. To be successful in this role, you will have to take the initiative to drive change in the organization. This role will be based in East Granby, CT or Middletown, CT.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working directly with the team at the USA Mechanical & Energy Services and the Regional VP of Finance you will play a key role in establishing and executing financial and accounting operations. Job responsibilities include:
- Manage the reporting of accurate financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Manage all aspects of the month-end close process, including completing journal entries, preparing accruals and reserve support, and ensuring the general ledger is complete, materially accurate, and closed timely and in accordance with internal and external reporting requirements.
- Proactively seek opportunities to improve planning and reporting processes (e.g., achieving a 10-day close for financial reporting).
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the accounting department.
- Oversee and manage the billing and collection function, making sure customers are billed timely with collections being made in accordance with credit terms.
- Oversee and manage the accounts’ payable function, making sure vendor invoices are processed in a timely manner in the correct accounting period and paid on time.
- Oversee and manage the treasury functions.
- Cash flow forecasting.
- Monthly commissions payout calculations
- Manage the revenue recognition, making sure revenues are recognized in accordance with US GAAP (company employs the percentage of completion method for project revenues, Time and material revenues are recognized as control passes to the customer).
- Direct all aspects of accounting operations, overseeing all transactions related to the general ledger.
- Collaborate on operational issues with managers in different departments at the company.
- Assist with requests for financial information that come from the parent company.
- Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with internal financial and accounting policies and procedures while preparing company to scale for growth.
- Build and foster strong cross-functional relationships across the business. Help the company leadership understand how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together and drive performance.
- Help hire, develop, and retain skilled accounting staff.
- Lead core financial processes including annual budgets, monthly/quarterly forecasts.
- Provide the management team with information and insights vital to the decision-making process.
- Model the highest ethical standards and behaviors as a leader in the organization.
CANDIDATE ATTRIBUTES:

Minimum Qualifications:
- 4 years accounting experience / background.
- 1 years managerial experience (managing staff that report to you).
- Proven experience managing a general ledger of a company and running a month-end close process from start to finish.
- Experience with percentage of completion accounting.
- Knowledge of invoicing, payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.
- Good understanding of US GAAP.
- Strong ability to communicate accounting and financial information into common language.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- A positive and resourceful can-do attitude.
- Ability to work as a team player.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
- Knowledge of Cost Accounting.
- Experience using Sage Intacct.
