At all times, perform work within the Medical Assistant (MA) scope of practice
The title and job duties of the Medical Assistant could be altered based on restrictions and freedoms dictated by the state’s practice act. Examples might include Certified Medication Aid, Certified Medical Technician, Med Tech, etc. The Medical Assistant is responsible for providing his or her current credentials, program description and for understanding his/her scope of practice.
Accurately measure and record vital signs and weights
Collect and log intake screenings (completed by correctional officers) for sick call
Document patient interview, history, and chief complaint
Provide patient education on topics such as the correctional facility’s policies and discharge planning
Prepare patients for examination and perform routine screening tests, such as a TB skin test
Perform phlebotomy and collect other lab specimens as ordered by the practitioner
Collect specimens and perform on-site lab tests, such as urine screens and finger sticks
Prepares and documents the administration of medication, treatments and other tasks as ordered by the practitioner
Create charts, file documentation, and maintain an organized filing system in accordance with HIPAA.
Obtain written permission for release of medical records from patients, send the release to providers, then log and track receipt.
Prepare and copy documentation for release as directed by the facility administrator, ACH corporate office and in compliance with HIPAA regulations
Assist nursing staff in emergency situations
Collect and record data for CQI (continuous quality improvement) reporting
Schedule off-site appointments, as requested
Maintain aseptic techniques and infection control precautions
Notify supervisor of medical and security incidents
Present/participate in in-service education sessions
Maintain an organized system for keeping current folders of forms and other documentation used in medical operations
Maintain an inventory of medical and office supplies, pharmaceuticals and documents as directed by the supervisor
Transcribe medication and treatment orders
Any and all other duties as assigned
Graduation from an accredited program
Successfully pass a national certification exam
Current certification in good standing (if applicable to the state requirements)
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; hands-on training
Must comply with all current and future state, federal and local laws, and regulations.
Must be able to comply with court orders, medical department rules and the policies and procedures of the county jail
