USLI is seeking a professional experienced in casualty/general liability claim handling to join our team and contribute their expertise to adjusting general liability and liquor liability claims for restaurants, bars/taverns, beer/wine/liquor stores, caterers, banquet halls, special events, and a variety of other commercial risks. Successful candidates should be strong analytical thinkers, assertive decision makers and have a strong desire to persuade others through negotiation and conflict management. The position offers ongoing challenges, even for the most experienced professional, as every claim is unique, providing new opportunities to learn and grow.
Essential Functions:
Examiners are responsible for confirming coverage by reviewing the first notice of loss and policy information. Examiners prepare coverage position letters such as disclaimers and reservation of rights. Once coverage is confirmed, the examiner conducts a thorough and focused investigation of the claim to assess liability and damages. Examiners will retain independent adjusters and provide direction, as appropriate, and will be accountable for all aspects of the investigation including witness interviews/statements, scene inspections, securing documents, videos and other evidence pertinent to the claim evaluation. Examiners must understand and apply statutory and case law to assess liability exposure. Examiners should identify joint tortfeasors and ensure all parties pay their fair share. Examiners are responsible for maintaining adequate reserves as the claim develops to properly reflect ultimate exposure based upon liability and damage evaluation. Examiners are responsible for proactive file management toward final disposition via an effective diary, directly negotiating claims with a claimant or claimant attorney, overseeing defense counsel to ensure effective litigation management with established guidelines and reviewing/approving settlement agreements. Examiners must maintain substantive file notes that document all relevant claim activity. Examiners are responsible for preparing comprehensive and concise reserve authority requests, reinsurance reports, serious loss reports, coverage position letters as well as reports to underwriting and other departments.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
In addition to the essential functions, an examiner is expected to provide excellent customer service by adhering to established claim service promises including responding to internal and external phone calls/emails the same day and making prompt contact with policyholders upon receipt of a claim. The position may entail completion of special projects. Examiners must obtain and maintain state licenses through continuing education. Examiners should also further their professional and personal development through courses offered by the company. Occasional nationwide travel required for participation in mediations and other claim-related activities (currently being done remotely due to the pandemic).
Specific Skills:
Strong oral and written communication skills, insightful analytical skills, effective negotiation skills, excellent organizational and time management skills, technical knowledge of insurance coverage, negligence law and claim evaluation.
Minimum Job Requirements:
We are seeking 2 years (Associate Claim Examiner) or 7 years (Claim Examiner) of relevant experience handling general liability/casualty matters including prior examiner, adjuster, paralegal, attorney/lawyer and/or other transferable experience. Liquor liability experience, multi-jurisdictional knowledge, advanced degrees and/or JD are a plus.
