Responsible for performing functions as authorized under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. In addition, performs basic nursing tasks to include patient care, reporting patient conditions, circumstances, and maintaining equipment and unit cleanliness. The nurse extern must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.
Conditions: May be required to work irregular schedules. Potential exposure to hazard materials/situations to include but not limited to, blood-borne pathogens, ionizing radiation, and communicable diseases.
DUTIES, ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implements and documents an individualized plan of care which incorporates age specific considerations and includes discharge planning and patient/family teaching.
- Responsible for performing technical procedures as authorized under the direction of an RN and/or Nurse Manager. In addition, performs basic nursing assistant responsibilities.
- Demonstrates a basic understanding of the terminology, processes and procedures, regulations relating to the type of patient care provided in the unit/area of employment.
- Incorporates knowledge while performing the unit-specific technical procedures and job responsibilities of the nurse extern position.
- Responsible for completing basic Nurse Extern competencies in addition to departmental specific competencies.
- Collects patient data under the direction of licensed personnel.
- Takes ownership of assignments; other duties as assigned or requested.
- Communicates and listens effectively with internal and external customers; effectively understands instructions and shares knowledge.

Responsibilities: Education:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Must be enrolled in an accredited nursing program with an anticipated program completion within 24 months from the date hire.
- Medical Technology; Anatomy and Physiology
Experience:
- Must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing in a professional nursing
program
Skills:
- Ability to maintain accuracy, consistency, and confidentiality, ability to effectively communicate; strong customer service skills.
Certification and Licensure:
- CPR
