Lecturer or Professional Practice Assistant Professor – Plumbing

Overview

The Department of Aviation and Technical Education in the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences at Utah State University (USU) offers a non-tenure track, nine-month faculty position as a Lecturer, or Professional Practice Assistant Professor of Plumbing. The relative weights for this position is 95% teaching and 5% service.  As part of USU's land grant mission to make academic programs accessible throughout the state, the position will be physically located at the USU Eastern Campus in Price, Utah. 

This position is a non-tenure track academic-year (nine-month) appointment plus 2 months of summer funding budgeted for this position. An additional month of salary may be available based upon external funding sources and/or departmental opportunities. The primary role assignment is teaching  and the successful candidate will teach undergraduate career and technical education courses to students pursuing Plumbing certificates and degrees with a focus upon southeast Utah. The major focus of this position is to build stackable pathways in a 2 2 2 model with concurrent enrollment, focused Plumbing training, culminating in technical education certificates, and further stackablity into AAS and BS degrees based upon industry needs. The target is to provide opportunities for students and to develop a skilled Plumbing workforce in Southeast Utah.  All faculty members are also expected to make positive contributions to the University through a service role.

Estimated start date is January 1, 2023.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant for the position will teach, improve, and develop courses in the Plumbing program with an emphasis in the certificate and degree programs. Instructional emphasis will be placed on providing excellent instruction in Plumbing content. Additionally, the importance of providing Plumbing training to non-degree seeking students will be recognized. Instruction to concurrent /dual enrollment students, adults, and the local workforce, as needed, will be expected. Participation in university, college, and departmental activities is required as part of each USU faculty member's service responsibilities. Engagement in the local community is expected. The effective use of USU's learning management system (i.e. Canvas) is required. 

• Classroom and laboratory instruction.
• Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching. 
• Demonstrated depth of understanding of the International Mechanical Code and other State and Local applicable codes as well as industry practices.
• Teach courses that provide workforce training and industry validated certifications.
• Teach some evening, high school, and community courses as needed.
• Share in management, maintenance, and improvement of the Plumbing facility and equipment.
• Development of program advisory committee (PAC) and coordination of biannual PAC meetings.
• Serve on department, college, and university committees.
• Advise and recruit students.
• Participate in, advise, and promote SkillsUSA.
• Actively participate in professional growth and development.
• Demonstrated interest and commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. 
• Collaboration as a contributing member of a faculty team. 
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Lecturer:

• State of Utah Journeyman Plumber License
• A.S. or A.A.S. degree, or higher, in a closely related field from an accredited school. 
• At least three years of industry or related experience where work is performed to a recognized industry code. Up to two years of post-secondary education may be substituted for work experience.
• Teaching-focused candidate who understands and is committed to the dual instructional mission of the Aviation and Technical Education department. 
• A commitment to student success. 
• Willingness to work to improve instructional effectiveness and technical skills. 
• Ability to work as a member of an instructional team where individual needs are subordinate to team goals. 
• Demonstrated effectiveness in written and oral communication, interpersonal, organizational, and team-building skills.

Professional Practice Assistant Professor:

In addition to the qualifications listed above:

• B.S. degree or greater in a closely related field.
• A minimum of three years' experience teaching high school or college students.

Preferred Qualifications:

• An ability to accommodate students with various learning styles. 
• Dynamic interpersonal skills, and a commitment as a team member. 
• Ability to foster consensus and collaboration. 
• An ability to set specific departmental goals and develop related curriculum
