Job Purpose
UGE Foreman manages crews to complete daily tasks related to the construction and maintenance of underground power lines. This position requires extensive knowledge of underground electrical distribution systems, management of multiple crews, distribution trouble shooting, management of storm crews, scheduling of crews, and coordinating resources. Tasks may include installing underground primary conductors, reconducting, and managing various types of equipment used for the distribution of electricity. Foreman read blueprints of projects and are responsible for production efficiency, training, and the safety of their crews. This position oversees multiple underground utility line teams and coordinates with both internal/external departments to manage logistic support.
Essential Functions
- Ensure crews have all the necessary materials for the job and assure all permits, procedures, and licenses are current for the work being conducted.
- Oversee and accomplish all work related to the projects while ensuring safety is a top priority.
- Coordinate and supervise multiple crew’s daily tasks related to digging and placing product.
- Perform switching procedures to isolate and insulate, splice, and terminate underground power lines following proper safety procedures.
- Provide for connecting and disconnecting, installing and removal, moving and transferring of various electrical devices on customers facilities, i.e., transformers, transformer banks, regulators, switches, switching devices, capacitor banks, etc.
- Properly train and supervise crews to phase and mark/tag underground equipment safely.
- Facilitate daily toolbox talks and weekly safety inspections to keep the crews safe.
- Complete all paperwork in a timely manner.
- Operate equipment, as needed, to train and assist crews in the completion of work.
- Train new hires and trainees to learn the trade.
- Call in utilities located at each project site.
- Inspect to ensure job quality.
- Track employee hours and provide timely turn in of correct information.
- Drive or haul equipment to/from job sites.
- Perform other duties as required and/or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- A High School Degree, or equivalent.
- CDL Class A license; Or obtain one in 90 days
- Understanding of advanced electrical principles, including knowledge of electricity and how to safely work around it.
- Knowledge of customer’s specifications being able to read and interpret prints.
- Proficiency in all phases of UG line construction.
- Assume full responsibility for completed work with quality and timeliness.
- Compliance with proper safety standards, procedures, and work practices according to MasTec or the customer, whichever standard is higher.
- Ability to coordinate crew-pass out daily task for each employee.
- Ability to talk with customers’ inspectors and have a sense of customer service.
- Experience operating heavy equipment and general construction.
- Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more or 20 inches or less, with the ability to judge distance and space relationships.
- Precise hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
- Ability to work outdoors, even in extreme weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- 10 or more years of experience, including significant experience supervising and training skilled labor.
- OSHA 20 Certification.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
This job operates in a field environment. This role routinely requires extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, lifting in awkward positions, standing, twisting, reaching above shoulder level, working in confined spaces, working off a pole or in a bucket. Also, working in inclement weather conditions, such as extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind for 10 hour work days, with breaks. During storms this role may in these conditions from 10 to 15 hours daily, breaks included.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This position is physically active, with lifting required. Must be able to bend and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
