Asst Professor - Family & Consumer Sciences (Design, Merchandising, & Textiles)

JOB TITLE:   

Assistant Professor, Family and Consumer Sciences, Design, Merchandising, and Textiles 

JOB PURPOSE:   

Instructional and research support for the Design, Merchandising, and Textiles unit, Family & Consumer Sciences 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

This faculty member will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Design, Merchandising and Textiles program. These courses may include, but are not limited to: 1) Global Sourcing for Textile Products, 2) Retail Math and Merchandise Planning for Textile Products, 3) Visual Merchandising for apparel and interiors, 4) Functions of the Design, Merchandising and Textiles Industries, and/or 5) Merchandising Technologies. Additional courses as part of the required teaching load will be negotiated as required. As a part of the teaching load, this individual will also be expected to manage a student-run retail/coffee shop space. In addition, the individual will be expected to conduct research/creative endeavors related to the merchandising, textiles or design fields and acquire external funding as appropriate for such scholarship; contribute to mentoring and recruitment of both undergraduate and graduate students throughout the calendar year; and provide service to the department, college, university and discipline.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:  

Responsibilities will also include contributing to professional, departmental, and university service activities. 

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: 

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

• Earned doctorate (or ABD) at time of appointment, with at least one degree in apparel, interiors, textiles, and/or merchandising, or closely related area
• Established college-level teaching record as graduate student, instructor or above
• Demonstrated research/creative scholarship that includes refereed/adjudicated publications, presentations, and/or design submissions
• Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching and service consistent with appointment. 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

• Minimum three years industry or business experience
• Experience managing a student run retail space
• Professional involvement in community, membership in appropriate professional and/or academic organizations 
• Effective communication and collaborative skills that facilitate an inclusive, diverse, equitable, and all-around positive environment.
