JOB TITLE:   

Research Computing Facilitator

JOB PURPOSE:

The Research Computing Facilitator will join the Advanced Research Computing Center’s (https://www.uwyo.edu/arcc) support team and will work to support researcher’s computational endeavors. This will include supporting the use of ARCC’s computational resources, researchers’ desktop computers, national resources, and a wide range of scientific software from a user’s perspective.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Respond to users’ technical issues utilizing ARCC services including HPC, data storage, scientific software, as well as with nationally available resources.  (e.g. NWSC supercomputer.)
  • Act as liaison for research labs in relation to ARCC tech services, and support researchers’ use of nationally available computational resources.  This includes assessing the scientific needs and workflows of research labs and making recommendations on how to best utilize technical resources.
  • Document ARCC services from user perspective, including setting up operational procedures and best practice guidelines.
  • Install scientific software, packages and libraries on individual Linux desktops and clusters.
  • Assist in the life cycle of user accounts and projects, lead office hour sessions, assist in the creation and presentation of teaching, training and workshops.
  • Review and optimize computational workflow and related jobs.
  • Provide software development assistance in one’s area of expertise
  • Attend and represent ARCC at regional, national and international conferences.
  • Professional development for continued support of new technology.  Must research and learn about new technologies that affect high performance computing, as they are developed.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: 

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

Education:  Master’s degree in scientific related field, such as physics, engineering, biology, bioinformatics, statistics, computer science or related

Experience: 2 years work-related experience

Required licensure, certification, registration or other requirements:  None

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • PhD in scientific field.
  • 5 years experience performing or supporting computational research.
  • Experience preparing scientific manuscripts and grant proposals.
  • Experience with cluster computing or the Cloud.
  • Experience with software development and code parallelization.  
  • Experience with ‘big data’ management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, professional demeanor.
  • Understanding of research ethics and data security.
  • Proficient in using Linux, Bash, a range of programming languages (R, Python, C, Java, etc)
