What are the responsibilities and job description for the Career advisor position at Valencia College?

Description of Job Function 1. Assists students in making their career and life plans based on a review of assessment information, past performances, and future educational and vocational goals.

Description of Job Function 2. Provides direction and resources related to the research of major and transfer requirement at other institutions.

Description of Job Function 3. Advises students on choosing the appropriate classes for their major and career / transfer goals.

Description of Job Function 4. Educates students about the interview process, including : application, resume and cover letter writing, portfolios, and interview techniques.

Description of Job Function 5. Assists with daily operations of the Career Center, publicizes services, hours, and career materials available to students, faculty and the community.

Description of Job Function 6. Provides developmental advising related to goal setting, career planning, and educational planning.

Description of Job Function 7. Orients students to My Career Planner. Description of Job Function 8. Maintains accurate records regarding utilization of materials and services.

Description of Job Function 9. Advises students about careers. Description of Job Function 10. Accesses, inputs and retrieves data from a computer Description of Job Function 11.

Administers assessments as assigned by Career Center Coordinators, and Counselors. Description of Job Function 12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Drivers License Requirement Drivers License Requirement Not Applicable Required Qualifications Required Minimum Education High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

Required Field of Study Other Required Qualifications Required License / Certification Preferred Qualifications Preferred Education & Field of Study Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Preferred Type of Experience

Experience working in an educational services department dealing with educational records. Preferred Licenses / Certification Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of college’s policies and procedures.

Knowledge of educational policies and graduation requirements of multiple colleges and universities.

Knowledge of current career trends

Skilled in interpersonal communications and interviewing procedures.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to work independently and as a team member with flexibility and thoroughness in the performance of assigned duties.

Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.

Ability to work effectively in a diverse community and meet the needs of diverse student populations. Working Conditions General Working Conditions This job primarily operates in a professional office environment.

The employee will routinely operate standard office equipment including but not limited to computers, keyboards, mouse, phones, photocopiers, printers, scanners, filing cabinets and fax machines.

While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Typical physical competencies include but are not limited to frequently remaining stationary, moving, reaching, positioning self and occasionally ascending / descending, lifting / moving objects weighing between 5-15 pounds.

This job also entails frequently communicating, discerning and exchanging information, detecting and perceiving objects up close, at a distance, and the ability to adjust focus.

The typical work environment, physical and cognitive demands listed above are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
