Role Qualifications: The Lead will be helping the Supervisor to improve working conditions (safety, quality, productivity, cost) and help increase other employee skills and capabilities.

Position Summary:

This position requires an experienced, energetic, and detail-focused individual to lead workers in the department while performing their work.  The lead trains others and checks the quality and accuracy of the work performed by other personnel. Leads shall have a working knowledge of the American Welding Society requirements in various areas of the welding field. The lead shall fully understand the information that is listed on the Welding Procedure Specifications, which include but are not limited to electrode classifications, gas types, polarity, equipment setup, etc. The lead shall have advanced knowledge reading blueprints and a good understanding of weld symbols, and the use of weld gauges.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • The Lead is responsible for following project plans, schedules, and ensuring that personnel under their direction perform daily and weekly activities. Be able to expedite and prioritize work according to daily production schedule meetings and set schedule dates to meet production goals.
  • Must complete work or projects relative to expectations; maintain material/workflow by supplying workstations with material quickly and efficiently.
  • Switching between multiple tasks is required daily to meet both customer and business needs.
  • Ensure that all are following established standards for, grinding, deburring, cleaning, drilling, punching, welding, etc. and equipment use.
  • Coordinate daily production floor activities and delegate assignments to personnel according to their proficiency.
  • Lead a team in the fabrication department, structural and non-structural, and assist in the assembly while performing work himself.
  • Review jobs and ensure that the materials required for the job(s) are on-hand before commencing work.
  • Ensure equipment is set to achieve quality sound welds and all other equipment is operated correctly.
  • Input data into the scheduling tool, monitor, communicate and update status, report miscommunication, due date project changes to supervisor.
  • Responsible to complete all production paperwork which includes but is not limited to Daily records, detailed work order notes, time spent on jobs, production labor tickets to an acceptable level of accuracy.
  • Participate in providing proper training to new employees and coach existing employees by following the established shop training and mentoring program for new and or inexperienced department personnel.
  • Ensure that personnel department is wearing PPE at all times, hearing protection, vision protection, steel-toed shoes and other appropriate protective clothing.
  • Ensure that the personnel are following all of the safety rules, safety procedures, all company rules, policies and procedures around the department and encourages others as well.
  • Assist supervisor with preventative maintenance to ensure that the equipment is serviced regularly in the department.
  • Pursue the highest level of cleanliness of machines and the work area in his/her department and actively, organizes and utilizes work space to be most effective and efficient manner.
  • Lead a crew to assemble and weld large and complex projects with minimal guidance or mistakes. Follow through with non-conformance processes and resolutions.
  • Assist when required to direct personnel in assembly, organizing, staging and shipping jobs. 
  • Oversee quality, efficiency, productivity, and keep personnel busy and productive in the department. In addition, assist other departments in keeping their crew members busy when necessary.
  • Responsible to complete all production paperwork which includes but is not limited to:  Daily records, detailed work order notes, time spent on jobs, production labor tickets to an acceptable level of accuracy.
  • Lead and instruct personnel in the absence of their department supervisor and assist in other departments. 
  • Perform all necessary quality checks during production and follow procedures when defective parts products are discovered.
  • Examine product or work to verify conformance to specifications, Verify accuracy by examining contents and comparing to work order, drawings, and prints prior to quality check. 
  • Ensure work is performed according to Documentation, Drawings, Engineering Standards Quality Manual Standards and (GMP) Good Manufacturing Practices. Translate general work requirements into a prioritized work plan for department and personnel
  • Perform different miscellaneous tasks that been instructed by their supervisor or management.
  • Facilitate effective communication between supervisors and employees.
  • Investigate and report all incidents (mishaps, accidents, poor performance, quality issues, etc.).
  • Backup supervisors in other departments and assist to keep all members busy and productive around the entire facility. 
  • Suggest and implement cost-saving ideas (create a plan, get approval and execute the idea).
  • Ensure the spare parts, supplies, consumables, equipment are not misused.

Lead must follow and ensure that all personnel follow all Federal and State rules, regulations, ordinances, laws, ETC in his area. This includes but is not limited to the following.  DOL, FLSA, FMLA, OSHA, EEOC, BOLI, OFLA, OROSHA.

 

Qualification/Requirements:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Preferred education, a high school diploma or GED or equivalent highly desired.
  • Must have experience in a metal processing industry and strong working knowledge with metal fabrication, tools, equipment and machinery.
  • Computer-literacy with software especially in Email, MS Office and MS Excel software.
  • Good oral/written communication skills and basic math skills.
  • Ability to properly handle confidential information and records.
  • Able to analyze information gathered in order to identify potential problems or discrepancies.
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and pay close attention to accuracy and give clear verbal directions,
  • Ability to read Blueprints and engineering fabrication drawings
  • Ability to motivate others and meet challenging deadlines in an efficient and profitable manner.
  • Able to set machines to perform quality, sound welds. 
  • Ability to run Air Carbon Arc machine and scarfing tip for weld removal with minimal parent metal removal.
  • Able to Weld various metals and use oxy-acetylene torch and plasma machine.
  • Be able to read and understand all symbols on drawings and blueprints. 
  • Has a full knowledge of current AWS D1.1 welding codes and procedures which covers structural steel welding, be familiar with robotic GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) gun, consumables and cables etc. and be 3G /4G FCAW certified.
  • Must be able to read and understand blueprints at a high level of competency.
  • Must show proficiency in the operation of all necessary equipment and use various power tools, saws, Ironworkers, punches, torches, portable plasma, sanders, sheers, and able to perform minor equipment repairs. 
  • Must have all fabrication tools of the trade, and must be able to read and decipher Job Order forms.
  • Must be punctual and display good attendance and be able to work at least 40 hrs per week, in addition, be available to work overtime when necessary.
  • Must demonstrate the ability in finding and correcting mistakes.
  • Perform different miscellaneous tasks that have been assigned by the Supervisor or management.
  • Prefer a certification and a minimum of 5 years in the welding steel and fabrication environment.

 

This is a working leadership position. While there will be daily leadership duties with this position it is expected that a percentage of your time will still be hands on function.
 

Lead needs to demonstrate that he/she is ready to take on new challenges and is willing to learn. Must be able to follow written and verbal directions from department supervisor/managers. Lead must have a good work ethic and can adjust to change, be a role model and one who leads by example. Lead is willing to motivate and mentor personnel, is a team player, who also takes responsibility and is honest and acts with integrity.

Physical Requirements

 

  • This position requires Squat/kneel, bend/stoop, crawl, twist/turn, grasp, push, reach overhead and outward frequently. Also requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs on regular bases and stand or walk up to 10 hours per day.
  • Occasional work outside in various weather conditions and work near moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and moderate to high noise levels.
