Valley Water is seeking an Assistant Electrical Engineer to join our Utility Electrical and Control Systems Engineering unit. This Assistant Electrical Engineer will support, under direct or general supervision, the peaking capital project need by providing critical electrical engineering support to various projects.

Raw water delivery operations depend on the reliable supply of electrical power for ensuring delivery of water to Valley Water treatment facilities, streams, and our customers. Water treatment and treated water delivery operations depend on the reliable supply of electrical power for ensuring delivery of safe, clean water to our customers in the Silicon Valley.

The Assistant Electrical Engineer will support 24 x 7 continuous Water Utility raw, treated and purified water operations, annual maintenance work plan, asset management plans. They will be responsible for the planning, design, development, implementation, modification, installation and maintenance of the Water Utility's critical electrical distribution systems in the area of water pumping, conveyance and treatment while ensuring work quality and adherence to professional codes, standards, and Valley Water specifications.

This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite, after completion of the probationary period (one year).

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist in preparing electrical engineering schematics, specifications, drawings, wiring diagrams, power, lighting, and floor plans, conduit and wire schedules, electrical details, and other supporting documentation for commercial and industrial applications.
  • Assist in performing economic and financial analysis of projects; provide cost estimates and cost benefit analysis for comparison.
  • Assist in reviewing and commenting on drawings, plans, and other work submitted by external consultants, engineers, contractors, and developers for conformance with professional codes, standards, and Valley Water specifications.
  • Assist in preparing technical and administrative correspondence and reports.
  • Assist in conducting engineering studies, investigations, and analyses, such as conditional assessments, feasibility reports, event incident/root cause analysis reports, and engineering evaluations in support of a planned project/improvement, system deficiencies, non-code compliant conditions, and electrical system and process anomalies.
  • Assist in performing engineering calculations such as voltage drop, load studies, arc flash analysis, and short circuit and overcurrent protection. Prepare technical reports documentation regarding electrical engineering-related issues.

Ideal Experience:
Assistant Engineer I - Electrical
Experience: One year of Electrical engineering is desirable.

Assistant Engineer II - Electrical
Experience:
Two (2) years of professional control system engineering experience.

  • Apply electrical engineering principles, practices, concepts, and standards to engineering problems.
  • Prepare, understand, and interpret construction plans, schematics, specifications, drawings, and other electrical engineering documents.
  • Analyze, interpret, summarize, and present technical electrical engineering information and data in an effective manner.
  • Learn, interpret, apply, explain, and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations, and District engineering policies and procedures.
Ideal Knowledge:
Assistant Engineer I - Electrical
  • Principles, practices, concepts, and standards of electrical engineering.
  • Principles and practices of power distribution.
  • Operational characteristics of low and medium voltage electrical equipment.
  • Principles of mathematics and its application to electrical engineering work.
  • Practices of researching electrical engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting effective and technical reports.
  • Office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the work.
  • English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
  • Principles and techniques for providing customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and District staff.
Assistant Engineer II - Electrical
In addition to the knowledge for Assistant Engineer I - Electrical:
  • Principles and practices of project budgeting, cost estimation, funding, project management, and contract administration.
  • Recent and on-going electrical engineering related developments, including information technology, current literature, and sources of information related to the operations of assigned area of responsibility.
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulatory codes, ordinances, and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility.
Ideal Training and Education:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in electrical engineering or a field related to assigned functional area(s).
OR
Possession of a valid California Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate with two (2) years of associated paraprofessional engineering experience

Required License or Certificate
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license. Individuals who do not meet the driver's license requirement due to a disability will be considered for a reasonable accommodation on a case-by-case basis.

Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification is desirable.
