Registered Nurse-Non-Invasive Cardiology Lab Full-Time Days

The Staff Nurse - Outpatient reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates commitment to the NM values of Patients First, Safety Always.
  • Understands and adheres to the Corporate Compliance Plan, the NM Code of Conduct, the Confidentiality Agreement, and Organizational Standards of Performance.
  • Keeps abreast on all pertinent federal, state and company regulations, laws and policies as they currently exist and as they change or are modified.
  • Assessment and Planning:
    • According to hospital and department specific guidelines and standards of practice, provides services reflecting age specific physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and environmental variables affecting the patient.
    • Recognizes signs of abuse/neglect.
    • Assesses patient/family educational needs, abilities, learning preferences, and readiness to learn.
    • Anticipates potential problems including those related to the patients disease entity, adjustment to disease, physical complications, knowledge deficit, discharge needs, and family support.
    • Participate in treatment planning with the interdisciplinary team and patient/family/significant others; patient/family education and discharge planning needs are assessed and included in the treatment plan.
    • Initiates and coordinates effective communication with physicians and/or other healthcare providers by reporting and recording pertinent observations and reactions regarding patient/family/significant others.
    • Assesses patient response to treatment regime, recognizes and analyzes the cause of patients symptoms and changing condition and initiates appropriate nursing interventions.
    • Prioritizes the needs of patients by demonstrating ability to readjust priorities with changing patient status.
    • Demonstrates respect for beliefs/values/religious preferences by assessing and communicating preferences to healthcare team and incorporating into multidisciplinary plan as appropriate.
    • Accepts responsibility for taking medication refill and side effect telephone calls, assessing urgency of requests, taking appropriate action and recommending appropriate follow-up and referrals if necessary. Participates in crisis intervention, referral to emergency department and/or activation of EMS as indicated.
  • Implementation:
    • Applies Standards of Care in the provision of safe patient care, with consideration given to normal characteristics of growth and development throughout the life span, consulting with team and clinical development coordinator, as needed (see Standards of Care).
    • Follows OSHA standards according to guidelines and policies/procedures.
    • Appropriate age-specific interventions are identified, implemented, and documented in a safe and timely manner; documentation and practice reflects patients response to interventions.
    • Includes the patient/family/significant other as active participants in the development of the plan of care, the care given, and in teaching.
    • Demonstrates competence in performance of nursing skills and department specific procedures.
    • Performs job responsibilities in a safe manner utilizing knowledge of standards of care in providing education relate to prescribed medications.
    • Follows hospital policy in reporting potential abuse/neglect.
    • Anticipates patient needs and coordinates patient care activities with other hospital departments, healthcare providers, and agencies in the community.
    • Demonstrates a general understanding of Advanced Directives policy and other ethical policies and procedures by obtaining, documenting, and communicating information throughout patient care.
    • Checks medication refill line and works closely with administrative staff, MDs and APNs to provide this service to patients.
    • Addresses questions regarding medication effects and side effects with patients and consults with physicians regarding appropriate follow-up as needed.
    • Provides individual age appropriate therapeutic interaction.
    • Provides medication education to patients and family.
    • Implements the Illinois Mental Health Code.
    • Complies with the Confidentiality Act.
  • Evaluation:
    • Consistently evaluates patient diagnostic data in a timely manner and intervenes appropriately.
    • Comprehensively and accurately documents patients response to interventions/medication regime.
    • Communicates patients status changes to physician and/or other healthcare team members as appropriate.
    • Evaluates patients and family's response to teaching plan including level of understanding, acceptance, and compliance.
    • Participates in evaluation of treatment plan.
    • Participates in utilization review and case management for outpatient clients.
  • Leadership:
    • Consistently uses effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills evidenced by clear, concise, objective, accurate, and timely messages.
    • Understands formal committee structure of department/organization and opportunities available to participate in decision making process in the department.
    • Views change as an opportunity for professional growth and enhanced patient care; understands and promotes rationale for change, attends new product in-services, and complies with new policies/procedures.
    • Identifies and utilizes resources available within the hospital and community by collaborating with other healthcare team members when developing and implementing the plan of care.
    • Delegates appropriate responsibilities to unlicensed staff members in accordance with the patients needs as well as capabilities and qualifications of the staff to be assigned.
    • Supports department leadership in implementation of new programs or ideas.
    • Demonstrates support by objective participation in and evaluation of change.
    • Independently accesses unit/hospital/department resources by referencing policies, procedures, and guidelines, as necessary to maintain standards of care.
    • Serves as a positive role model to students and orientees.
    • Answers questions and provides resources in a professional manner.
    • Participates in the selection of new staff as requested.
    • Participates in orientation of new personnel; creates a positive learning experience for students, encourages students to ask questions to further learning, invites students to assist with procedures as appropriate, and provides instructor with feedback.
    • Participates in the identification of own learning needs and sets goals for professional development by seeking appropriate consultation, formal education, or resources as needed to meet identified goals.
    • Provides input for the development of department goals and objectives and assists with implementing department goals and objectives.
    • Completes all department-based skill competencies during the designated time frame.
    • Objectively completes self-evaluation within assigned time frame; provides objective timely peer review input as requested.
    • Demonstrates an overall understanding of the changes in the healthcare market both locally and nationally.
    • Accepts and completes BHS related work assignments/special projects that enhance the quality of BHS patient care.
  • Continuous Quality Improvement and Risk Management:
    • Maintains knowledge of ongoing department and hospital based Performance Improvement initiatives and results by attending 50% of staff meetings annually.
    • Participates in PI activities.
    • Maintains safe and clean environment following hospital safety and infection control policies/procedures.
    • Encourages care providers compliance with safety and infection control policies/procedures; clarifies policies/procedures as needed.
    • Completes NETS in a timely manner when required per Policy and Procedure guidelines.
    • Reviews newly developed or changes in existing policies/procedures and modifies practice accordingly.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
  • 1 year nursing experience.
  • Credentials:
    • Legal Compliance.
    • Current RN license in the state of Illinois.
    • Current recognition in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers within 30 days of employment.
  • Knowledge of normal characteristics of growth and development throughout life span.
  • Competency in nursing skills for designated unit.
  • Annual Requirements:
    • Completion of at least 20 hours of continuing education.
    • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (re-certification every two years).
    • Skills Labs completed annually as required by department director/manager.

Preferred:

  • BS in nursing.
  • Previous mental health experience.
  • Current certification.
