The Dyer Observatory Space Science Summer Camp Counselor, VTS Employee at Dyer Observatory assists observatory staff and camp personnel with two weeks of summer camps for rising 5th-8th grade students at Dyer Observatory.
Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory is an inholding within the boundaries of Radnor Lake State Park and is home to the historic Seyfert Telescope. The facility provides a variety of STEM educational opportunities and summer science camps. It also hosts teacher workshops, lectures, field trips, celestial viewings, and general tours to achieve its overarching mission to bring the excitement of astronomy and physics to students and the public throughout the middle TN region. Public events such as Bluebird on the Mountain concerts and private rental events also make use of this unique property.
Key Functions and Expected Performance:
- Welcome campers daily.
- Assist observatory staff, camp teachers, and fellow counselors with tasks that include but are not limited to preparing refreshments, distributing supplies for activities, and setting up demonstration equipment.
- Encourage teamwork and assist campers during activities.
- Supervise campers to ensure they are following instructions, remain in designated areas, and are respectful of staff/teachers/speakers, equipment/property, and one another.
- Chaperone campers during the day trip to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, ensuring campers remain together in designated groups.
- Assist staff daily with dismissal of campers including escorting them to parents/guardians in the parking lot.
- Assist with cleanup at the end of each day including arranging tables/chairs for the next day.
- Required to have good teamwork skills.
Other Position Considerations:
- Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
- A physics/astronomy background is preferred but not required.
- Camp dates are July 10-14, 2023, and July 17-21, 2023.
- Each week of camp requires 40 hours of work. Candidates can expect to be at Dyer Observatory 8am-4pm each weekday except Wednesdays. Each Wednesday, a group day trip to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, requires personnel to be at Dyer Observatory at 7:00am; expected return time is approximately 4:30pm.
- Pay rate: $20/hr.
- Hired candidates will be required to undergo a background check and Protection of Minors training (both provided through Vanderbilt University).
