POSITION SUMMARY:
The Laboratory Manager is a senior staff position of the University and serves the STEM departments. The individual must be competent in setting up and performing laboratory experiments and understanding the techniques performed in the laboratory and the safety procedures required for carrying out experimentation. The person will be responsible for supervising student workers and other lab personnel, assisting in various laboratories, and helping to solve laboratory related problems. The individual must be a team player that is self-motivated and able to work independently. This individual will possess stop-work authority, allowing them to halt dangerous situations to help prevent injuries. The Laboratory Manager reports to the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Supervise the Laboratory Coordinator whose primary job responsibility is to maintain an accurate chemical inventory with an SDS online repository, dispense chemicals to student lab assistants and faculty members, and execute the plan for hazardous waste management.
Hire, train, and supervise a team of student workers whose job responsibilities are to prepare reagents and set out supplies and equipment for each lab section, clean laboratories and maintain stock for assigned lab rooms.
Implement yearly faculty and staff lab safety training.
Perform general laboratory duties; maintain and troubleshoot various laboratory instruments, train and supervise laboratory personnel/assistants.
Provide support for student lab experiments and undergraduate research studies.
Manage the STEM purchasing system and coordinate equipment inventory.
Design and implement equipment maintenance schedules.
Establish and maintain relationships with chemical and equipment supply vendors.
Coordinate with Facilities for repair and routine maintenance of the laboratories.
Supervise the organization of supply rooms for STEM.
Work collaboratively in a team-oriented approach maintaining excellent rapport with other faculty, staff, and students; such as attending staff meetings and any other related staff functions.
Be familiar with hazardous waste protocols, GHS Hazcom Standards, and chemical hygiene.
Serve as a member of the Risk Managment Committee and work in partnership with the administration to address university chemical concerns and enforcing the Chemical Hygiene Plan.
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor's degree with experience in the chemical, biological, and physical sciences.
Knowledge of general laboratory duties, maintenance and troubleshooting of various laboratory instrumentation, training and supervision of appropriate laboratory personnel.
CHO Training Course (within one year of hire).
Continuing education and safety training on a yearly basis.
Must have the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize, and meet deadlines; and function as a self-starter.
Must be detail-oriented, excellent at organization, and be flexible.
Must have a good driving record and qualify for University Driving Insurance.
Ability to interface with all levels of the university faculty, staff, students, administration and external vendors.
Strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills in working with various groups within the Vanguard system, as well as external university research groups and private industry.
Knowledge of purchasing procedures in an academic setting, as well as skilled in MS Word and Excel.
Knowledge and acceptance of principles and philosophies of Vanguard University, its programs, and requirements.
Possess a growing Christian faith and be committed to integration of faith and learning.
Must be able to work non-traditional hours
SALARY:
Full-time position. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and includes a full benefits package.
$55,100 to $67,350 (Annual)
Placement within the salary range is commensurate upon education and experience. Posted salary range reflects anticipated hiring scale for the position. Vanguard University also offers a very competitive and generous benefits package. LAB623
