What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student Nurse Extern position at VCU Health?
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, licensed independent practitioner, or manager, the Student Nurse Extern assists with a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities. These direct activities may include, assistance with activities of daily living, comfort care, safety, nutritional support and performance of selected diagnostic and therapeutic tasks and procedures as directed. Indirect patient care activities may include maintaining a clean, safe environment, sterilization and ensuring adequate inventory of supplies and equipment.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: N/A Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent Experience REQUIRED: N/A Experience PREFERRED: Acute care experience as a nursing assistant or aide experience Education/training REQUIRED: Completion of state recognized CNA program OR Completion of first semester junior year in a BSN program dependent upon school curriculum. VCU/MCV BSN students: Completion of Sophomore year, Nursing 201, 202, 261. Associate Degree and Diploma programs: completion of first year or a minimum of two semesters of basic nursing courses. (Specialty areas e.g. pediatrics, women’s health, psychiatry may require completion of a clinical rotation in that area OR Completion of EMT program OR Completion of medical assistant program Education/training PREFERRED: N/A Independent action(s) required: Functions under direction of RN in providing patient care, emotional support, nursing in-services, patient conferences, rounding with physicians and problem solving; all in accordance with hospital, nursing and unit policy/procedure. Requires prior approval or guidance from supervisor: time/schedule changes, legal issues, directed care which deviates from standard, identify educational resources to meet developmental needs Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): N/A Additional position requirements: OR Externs work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your specific Nurse Manager/Practice Manager. Schedules, including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet unit requirements and/or as needed. Age Specific groups served: As appropriate based on unit assignment. Physical Requirements (includes use of assistance devices as appropriate): Physical: Lifting 20-50 lbs. Other: describe exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances Activities: Prolonged standing, Frequent bending, Walking (distance), Climbing (steps, ladder, other), Reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive), Repetitive motion Mental/Sensory: Problem solving, Hearing, Speak clearly, Write legibly, Reading, Logical thinking Emotional: Steady pace, Able to handle multiple Priorities, Frequent and intense customer interactions, Able to adapt to frequent change
